This Friday and Satur- day, July 26 and 27, from 7 to 11 p.m., the duo Hecktic Week will be performing its energy-packed music with powerful vocals and a driving beat. They play soul and blues influenced infusion of nostalgic country, folk and rock. Gypsy (Jennifer Weekly) plays bass guitar and sings with a voice reminiscent of Janis Joplin. Heck (Michael Hecker) is a “one-man band” play- ing guitar, harmonica and drums. Together, Hecktic Week brings the sound of a big band in a small package. They have survived for half a millennium by hunting whales with bamboo harpoons and handmade wooden boats powered by sails of woven palm fronds. But now, under assault from the rapa- cious forces of the modern era and a glob- al economy, their way of life teeters on the brink of collapse. Award-winning journalist Doug Bock Clark, one of a handful of Westerners who speak the Lamaleran language, lived with the tribe across three years, and he brings their world and their people to vivid life in this gripping story of a vanishing culture. Deeply empathetic and richly reported, “The Last Whalers” is a riveting, powerful chronicle of the collision between one of the planet’s dwindling indigenous peoples and the irresistible enticements and up- heavals of a rapidly transforming world. We’re almost to the end of the formal summer reading program, though you can continue to read on. We have three big fi- nales coming the end of July and beginning of August. First is the Grand Finale at the Mapleton branch, which will take place on Wed., July 31, from 1 to 3 p.m. Next is the Grand Finale in Florence, tak- ing place at the main branch the following day, Thursday, Aug. 1, beginning at 10 a.m. and running for four hours. Finally, the teens are going to celebrate summer reading with a Teen Lock-In on Friday, Aug. 2, beginning at 6 p.m. and offi- cially ending at 8 a.m. the following morn- ing. Teens can always leave earlier than that but once they have left, they are gone for the rest of the night. The big finales in Mapleton and Florence will feature the ev- er-popular water slide, book give-away, face painting, a picnic, and lots of other family fun. Don’t miss out at these popular sum- mer library events. No Story Times in August Story times in August will be on hiatus and will resume in September. Friends of the Library to Meet The Friends of the Library will be meet- ing tomorrow, Thursday, July 25, at 10 a.m. in the Bromley Room. All Friends mem- bers, prospective Friends members, and li- brary supporters are encouraged to attend. The Friends support the library through book sales and others fundraising, provid- ing refreshments at library programs (such as the recent folk music concert and the Apollo 11 program), and providing volun- teers to help with library projects. Ladies of Elks make deliveries to veterans The Ladies of Elks ‘Touch of Home’ committee sent donations to two Veteran’s Homes of Ore- gon. Leo and Shirley Stapleton made deliveries to the homes in Salem and The Dalles on June 26 and July 2. The Levi’s store in Eugene do- nated a large amount of clothing. Laura Matheny, Joanie Guaco and Kathy Price helped Leo and Shirley sort everything. More than 110 dozen cookies were taken to each home, which were donated by the Ladies of Elks, the Quilt Guild, the Rolling Elks, the Lodge members and the Band of Brothers. “The veterans look forward to the clothing and cookies and are deeply appreciative of all that is done for them,” said Leo Staple- ton. “We in turn thank them for their service to our country.” ReVision street closures continue through July 31 Notices of intersection closures for the ReVision Florence Streets- cape Project were posted for clo- sures that began Monday.
