The Lane Coun- ty Sheriff ’s Office has re- ceived several reports from community members who have received calls from scammers pretending to be Sheriff ’s Office employees. Scammers are telling com- munity members they have a warrant for their arrest and can pay a fine or fee to clear the warrant. These calls are a scam. Scammers often ask for payment in the form of gift cards or cash cards to remedy a fictitious war- rant for missing jury duty or unpaid parking tickets. The Lane County Sher- iff ’s Office does not make phone calls to community members regarding war- rants and would never ask a community member to purchase “cash cards” to pay fees. These calls are a scam, and community members should hang up immediate- ly and not engage with the caller. Help us stop these scammers from victimiz- ing others by telling your friends and family about these scam calls so they recognize the call for what it is and hang up. If you are the victim of a phone scam and have lost money as a result of the scam, please report it to your local law enforce- ment agency. If you did not lose any money, you do not need to call and report it. Below are some tips to decrease your chances of becoming a phone scam victim: If you receive a call that you believe is a scam, STOP, and take a minute to think. If you are still unsure, hang up and call the person back at the publicly listed num- ber for that agency. Never provide personal information to callers, in- cluding your name, address or banking information. Be aware of callers who are unprofessional, pushy or use scare tactics such as threatening arrest if pay- ment is not made. Callers asking for pay- ment through wire trans- fer, cash cards such as green dot cards or other non-trackable methods are signs of a scam. Legitimate government agencies will not ask you to provide pay- ment using these methods. Do check the caller’s in- formation. If they claim to be from a law enforce- ment agency or other gov- ernmental agency, call the publicly listed phone num- ber for that agency to verify the caller’s authenticity. Scammers have used the names of actual Sheriff ’s Office employees in the past so simply verifying that the agency has some- one with that name doesn’t mean it isn’t a scam. Community members can also report fraud to the Oregon Attorney General’s Consumer Hotline by call- ing 1-877-877-9392. way 101 (east side) — Closed July 22 starting at 7 a.m. • Maple Street and High- way 101 (east side) — Closed July 22 through 31, starting at 7 a.m. on July 22. Tsunami Preparedness and Response A tsunami is a series of sea waves, usually caused by a displacement of ocean floor by an undersea earth- quake. • When at the coast, know the distant and local tsuna- mi evacuation routes for low lying areas; look for educa- tional signs at beach entry areas and tsunami assembly area points. • Do not return until the alert has been canceled and emergency officials have ad- vised that it’s safe to return. Every Core Donor from 2018’s Campaign has volunteered to fund the 2019 Matching Funds Campaign, with the following Core Donors joining them: ng Hu Earthquake Preparation– Cascadia Subduction Zone or On-Shore Earthquakes: • Anchor and secure heavy appliances, furniture and glass objects to wall studs and/or other furniture items. • Know how to turn off water, gas and electricity and have the tools needed to do so. • Tie a bag next to your bed with shoes, extra glass- es, gloves, poncho, flash- light or headlamp so you are ready to evacuate once the shaking stops. • Have a three to five-day kit in your car in case you need to use it as a place of shelter until the aftershocks subside. Earthquake Response—If you feel an earthquake • Drop, cover and hold on until after the shaking stops, then evacuate outside to survey damages to the building. • If indoors, get under a sturdy table, hold on and be prepared to move with the table. • If in bed, stay in the bed and protect your head with a pillow. • If outdoors, find a clear spot away from buildings and trees and stay until the shaking stops. • If in a vehicle, pull over to a clear location until shaking stops. Sheriff’s office offers disaster preparedness tips Prepare for the Next Quake or Tsunami. Some people think it is not worth preparing for an earthquake or tsunami because whether you survive or not is up to chance. However, most Oregon buildings will survive even a large earthquake, and so will you, especially if you follow these simple response guidelines and start prepar- ing today. If you know how to rec- ognize the warning signs of a tsunami and understand what to do, you will survive that too, but you need to know what to do ahead of time. Government agencies and other emergency orga- nizations cannot protect you from the next earthquake or tsunami. Even under the best of circumstances, medical aid or fire and law enforcement officials may not be able to reach you for many hours or even days. It is our responsi- bility as individuals, neigh- borhoods and communities to reduce risks, to prepare for the critical period im- mediately after the earth- quake and to make sure that planning for earthquakes and tsunamis has the high priority it deserves. By becoming informed, we can take actions to pro- tect ourselves, reduce losses and recover quickly.
