SIUSLAW NEWS | WEDNESDAY, JUNE 12, 2019 | 5A Peace Harbor earns OPSC Patient Library Safety Improvement Award PeaceHealth Peace Har- bor Medical Center recently earned recognition as a Leader in Patient Safety Improvement from the Oregon Patient Safety Commission. The honor was presented March 15 during the eighth-annual Oregon Patient Safety Event in Portland. This was the first time the OPSC presented this award, which recognizes healthcare organizations that have made innovations in patient safety or spread effective patient safety practices in 2018. “Our caregivers and provid- ers have embraced a culture of safety at Peace Harbor, which encourages them to speak up if they see any potential safety issues, and work together to find a solution that will help ensure that we provide the best possible care for our patients,” said Jason Hawkins, chief ad- ministrative officer. “I am so proud of their hard work and commitment. We are honored to receive this award.” Peace Harbor also received a nod during the event for ex- ceeding OPSC’s Patient Safety Reporting Program targets. When Estelle Doheny, the eccentric widow of oil tycoon Edward Doheny, finally obtained an original copy, it was the cul- mination of a 40-year pur- suit. Estelle, the first woman and perhaps the most devout owner of the Bible, would be its last private owner as well. After her death, the unique Bible would go on to enable scientists — using the very machine that isolated pluto- nium for the atomic bomb — to make the most important advance in understanding the first printed book. In “The Lost Gutenberg,” Margaret Leslie Davis richly recounts five centuries in the life of this copy of the Bible, from its very creation by Jo- hannes Gutenberg in Mainz, Germany; to its ownership by the British heir to the Lea & Perrins Worcestershire sauce empire; to its brush with one of the most notorious crimes of the 20th century, the Teapot Dome scandal; to its ultimate resting place in a steel vault in Tokyo. “The Lost Gutenberg” draws readers into this in- credible sage, inviting them into the colorful lives of each of its collectors along the way. Through vivid storytelling and unprecedented access into private records, Davis offers a unique and riveting history for bibliophiles and book lovers alike. Exploring books as objects of desire across centuries, Davis leaves readers not only with a broad- er understanding of the cul- ture of rare-book collectors, but with a deeper awareness of the importance of books in our world. Judy Fleagle to Speak Judy Fleagle, well-known local author, will be speaking at the library this Saturday, June 15, at 1 p.m., about her latest book “Oregon Coast Guide for the Unexpected!!!” Fleagle is a former school- teacher and editor/staff writer for Oregon Coast Magazine. After retiring in 2009 she embarked on a professional writing career and has writ- ten “Crossings: McCullough’s Coastal Bridges,” “The Cross- ings Guide to Oregon’s Coast- al Spans,” “Around Florence” and “Devil Cat and Other Col- orful Animals I Have Known.” She was one of the founders of the Florence Festival of Books and still serves on that event’s planning committee. In her latest book, she de- scribes points of interest to visit along the coast which are “odd, unusual or quirky,” including Darlingtonia State Natural Site, Lewis and Clark Salt Works, Neskowins’ An- cient Forest, Coos Bay’s Egyp- tian Theatre and Port Orfords’ Dolly Dock. The Oregon Coast Highway The library is pleased to present author Laura Wilt on Saturday, June 22, at 1 p.m., discussing her latest book, “Images of America: Oregon Coast Highway.” By the time the final links in the Oregon Coast High- way were made in 1936, the highway stretched 394 miles from Astoria to the border of California. It had taken 12 years to complete the con- struction over stretches of rugged headlands and thick forests. Wilt, a librarian at the Oregon Department of Transportation, will tell the story of the construction of this amazing, iconic high- way. State of Oregon marks historic celebration of ‘Women Veterans Day’ For the first time in Ore- gon history, Gov. Kate Brown has designated a statewide observance recognizing women veterans. Women Veterans Day will take place on Wednesday, June 12. That date also marks the 71st anniversary of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act, which ac- knowledged the great con- tributions made by women in the military and finally enabled them to serve as reg- ular members of the United States Armed Forces and Re- serves. “As a proud veteran of the U.S. Army, this historic proc- lamation is something that is obviously very personal for me,” said Kelly Fitzpatrick, director of the Oregon De- partment of Veterans’ Affairs (ODVA). “I am proud that here at ODVA, women veter- ans are represented at every level of our agency, including the very top.” Women have served in our nation’s wars and conflicts since the American Revolu- tion, traditionally serving as nurses, cooks, spies and in administrative support roles. During World War I, wom- en were allowed to enlist as yeomen in the Navy and re- servists in the Marine Corps, filling in for men who were deployed to the battlefields of Europe. Special units were formed in World War II, such as the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Ser- vice (WAVES), Women’s Army Corps (WACs), Coast Guard Women’s Reserve (SPARs), Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) and the Marine Corps Women’s Reserve (WRs), allowing women to begin serving in positions previously re- served for men. Today, women comprise more than 16 percent of the country’s military forces, with more than 25,000 wom- en veterans currently living in Oregon. They are also the fastest growing segment of the veteran population. “We are proud of all wom- en veterans in the state of Oregon. You are a vital part of the Oregon veteran com- munity, and we will continue to work to anticipate your needs and help you thrive in our state. Thank you for your service to our country,” Fitz- patrick said. Oregon joins three oth- er states — California, New York and Texas — that have officially designated June 12 as Women Veterans Day.
