A diverse group of re- cipients included: the Ma- pleton School District, two church projects, Mapleton Food Share, and the Siu- SMS team wins county ‘Brain Bowl’ slaw Watershed Council. The grants ranged from $250 to $2,500. Applications for post- high school education scholarships are now downloadable by request by emailing jayh6539@ msn.com. The application deadline is July 15. O n May 31, 16 members of Siuslaw Middle School Knowledge Bowl Team traveled to Lane Community Col- lege to compete against 38 other middle school teams from around Lane County in the Lane County Brain Bowl competition. In the end, one of the three teams from Siuslaw made the finals of the event and won first place, doubling the score of the second-place team in the finals. The winning team consisted of seventh graders Landon Severy and Sam Castle and eighth graders Jeff Edmond, Ava Glowacki, Ian Sissel and Kyle Hughes. It is the first time that a team from Siuslaw has won the compe- tition. Last year, one of the teams placed fourth. This was the final event for the Knowledge Bowl Team for the school year. Registration opens June 10 and tables generally fill up well before the Sept. 1 deadline. Large and small pub- lishers as well as fiction, non-fiction and children’s authors are welcome to par- ticipate. The festival is a cel- ebration of print books and is free to the public. For authors and pub- lishers participating, it’s a networking opportunity, and potential authors can discuss their manuscripts with participating publish- ers. The fees are $60 for a single 6-foot table, $75 for a single 8-foot table, $90 for a shared 8-foot ta- ble, and $100 for a group of three at an 8-foot table. There is no fee for authors under 18 years of age. Participants keep 100 percent of sales. Besides the book fair, there are two events on Friday, Sept. 27. The first is at 7 p.m., when best- selling author Bob Welch, award-winning newspaper columnist and author of more than 20 books includ- ing “The Wizard of Foz,” will be the keynote speaker. Tickets are $8 in ad- vance and $10 at the door. Then, from 3 to 4:30 p.m., all are invited to a free authors and publish- ers panel discussion. This year’s topic will be “The Ins and Outs of Publish- ing.” The application is available as of June 10 on the FFOB website at www.florencefestivalof- books.org. Siuslaw student among Kaiser scholarship winners Visit us online: www.TheSiuslawNews.com Hayley Meier, a senior at Siuslaw High School, has been awarded a $2,000 scholarship through the Kaiser Permanente North- west Heath Care Career Scholarship Program. She plans to pursue a health care career. Thirteen students in Lane County were awarded a total of $37,000. Overall, Kaiser Permanente North- west has awarded more than a half million dollars ($549,000) in college schol- arships to 173 diverse stu- dents in Oregon and Wash- ington in 2019 through its Health Care Career Schol- arship Program. The program is part of the organization’s ongoing efforts to improve commu- nity health by increasing access to educational op- portunity and developing a health care workforce that mirrors the communities it serves. This year’s investment brings the total scholar- ships awarded since the program’s inaugural year in 2009 to over $4 million. Recipients of the schol- arship receive more than financial assistance.
