Yet despite a century of med- ical progress, viral and bacte- rial disasters continue to take us by surprise, inciting panic and dominating news cycles. From the Spanish flu to the 1924 outbreak of pneu- monic plague in Los Ange- les to the 1930 “parrot fever” pandemic, through the more recent SARS, Ebola and Zika epidemics, the last 100 years have been marked by a suc- cession of unanticipated pan- demic alarms. In “The Pandemic Centu- ry,” a lively account of scares both infamous and less known, Mark Honigsbaum combines reporting with the history of science and med- ical sociology to artfully re- construct epidemiological mysteries and the ecology of infectious diseases. Readers meet dedicated disease detectives, obstruc- tive or incompetent public health officials and brilliant scientists often blinded by their own knowledge of bac- teria and viruses. We also see how fear of disease ex- acerbates racial, religious, and ethnic tensions — even though as the epidemiol- ogists Malik Peiris and Yi Guan write, “‘nature’ remains the greatest bioterrorist of all.” These pandemics remind us of the limits of scientif- ic knowledge, as well as the role that human behavior and technologies play in the emergence and spread of mi- crobial diseases. Judy Fleagle to Speak Judy Fleagle, well-known local author, will be speak- ing at the library on Saturday, June 15, at 1 p.m., about her latest book “Oregon Coast Guide for the Unexpected!!!” This book describes a num- ber of unusual and intrigu- ing points of interest to visit along the Oregon Coast. Friends of the Library Book Sale The Friends of the Library will be holding their next book sale this Saturday, June 8, and Sunday, June 9, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day in the Bromley Room at the library. Friends of the Library members can come to a spe- cial preview sale Saturday morning, from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. Memberships are available at the door. Friends president Linda Weight said, “If you want to stock up on some great sum- mer reading at great prices, this is your chance!” Proceeds from the sale benefit the Library District in many ways, including equip- ment, support of the summer reading program and the Li- brary Endowment Fund. Coast Connection, FRAA put out call to artists Pacific Publishing and the Florence Regional Arts Alliance (FRAA) are invit- ing artists to submit their 2-D artwork for the cover of the 2020 edition of the Central Coast Connection Phone Book. Artwork must be the original creation of the art- ist submitting and made within the last three years. Paintings can be in any me- dium (oil, pastel, watercol- or, etc.), but please not pho- tography this year. Artwork should relate to the region (Yachats to Reedsport, east to Deadwood), and may show scenery, buildings, people or other areas of in- terest. Artists do not need to be local residents, and entries are limited to three per art- ist. The artwork will be fea- tured on the cover of the publication, which is de- livered to almost 20,0000 residents annually. Addi- tionally, a $500 cash prize is being offered by Pacific Publishing to the winner, with all rights to publish the artwork for any promotion- al purposes determined by Pacific Publishing. The deadline for submission is Sun- day, June 30, and must be submitted online at w w w. f r a a o r e g o n . o r g / central-coast-entr y- instructions.html. Though submissions are done electronically, the winner will need to pro- vide the original artwork, suitably framed, to Pacific Publishing in exchange for the cash prize.
