The park has yet to be named and the city is encouraging residents to suggest a name for the trail and sitting area, which offers a view of the Siuslaw Bridge and the dunes. Tuesday’s ribbon cutting included a brief ceremony presided over my Mayor Joe Henry at the parking lot. Attendees then walked a short trail alongside the Siuslaw River to a covered picnic area, a short distance from the park entrance. Hot dogs and refreshments were served as the group joined city staff and members of the Public Works Department in opening the new park. Florence receives $20,000 OCF Grant for mural John C. (541) 997-9300 The City of Florence, through the efforts of the Public Art Committee vol- unteers and city staff, is the recipient of a $20,000 grant from the Irene Gerlinger Swindell Fund of Oregon Community Foundation (OCF). The grant helps support the collaborative effort to create the first large-scale public mural in Florence and to provide an engaging, welcoming entrance to the city. “The city was excited to receive this award an- nouncement, which oc- curred the week of our Pub- lic Paint Day for the mural. We are a hoping to have a great turn out of communi- ty members to help us kick off the mural painting,” said Sarah Moehrke, Communi- ty and Economic Develop- ment Assistant. The grant funds will be utilized to offset the costs of the mural installation. The remainder of the project is funded through the Flor- ence Urban Renewal Agen- cy (FURA). The muralist has begun the process of installation at the corner of Highway 126 and Quince Street. It is expected to be completed in early July 2019. “On behalf of the City of Florence and the Florence Urban Renewal Agency, the Public Art Committee is ex- tremely excited to receive this award from the OCF,” said Public Art Committee Chairman Harlen Springer. “The OCF rewards organi- zations who work in part- nerships to address commu- nity aspirations, as well as recognize and respect Or- egon’s diverse regions and populations and advance equity, diversity and inclu- sion. We are proud to be recognized for working to- ward these common goals.” The OCF puts donated money to work in Oregon — more than $100 million in grants and scholarships support Oregonians annu- ally. Residential housing code update, open house set The City of Florence in- vites all community mem- bers to attend an open house on Thursday, May 23, at Florence City Hall from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., to learn about proposed changes to the city’s residential code. Community members can drop in to share their thoughts at any time. There will be a presentation on the proposed changes begin- ning at 5:45 p.m. Florence’s residential zon- ing and land division codes are more than 35 years old and don’t reflect the hous- ing types needed to meet the city’s projected hous- ing needs. One of the main challenges of these outdated codes is that they prevent construction of affordable “missing middle” housing types such as townhouses, duets, duplexes, cottages and multifamily develop- ments with three or more units. “Our goal is to establish new residential codes that support all income lev- els, generations and family compositions in Florence,” said Planning Director Wendy FarleyCampbell. The residential code up- dates are part of a larger Housing and Economic Opportunities Project that kicked off in April 2017, when the city updated its Buildable Lands Analysis, Housing Needs Analysis and Economic Opportuni- ties Analysis. The Residen- tial Code Update Project will implement recommen- dations from the Housing Needs Analysis.
