It is written by Kevin Mittge Book Review “Northland” by Porter Fox America’s northern border is the world’s longest international boundary, yet it remains obscure even to Americans. The northern border was America’s primary border for cen- turies — much of the early history of the Unit- ed States took place there — and to the tens of millions who live and work near the line, the region even has its own name: the northland. Travel writer Porter Fox spent three years exploring 4,000 miles of the border between Maine and Washington, traveling by canoe, freighter, car, and foot. In “Northland: A 4,000 Mile Journey Along America’s Forgotten Bor- der,” he blends a deeply reported and beauti- fully written story of the region’s history with a riveting account of his travels. Setting out from the easternmost point in the mainland United States, Fox follows explorer Samuel de Champlain’s adventures across the Northeast; recounts the rise and fall of the timber, iron, and rail industries; crosses the Great Lakes on a freighter; tracks America’s fur traders through the Boundary Waters; and traces the 49th parallel from Minnesota to the Pacific Ocean. Fox, who grew up the son of a boat-build- er in Maine’s northland, packs his narrative with colorful characters — Captain Meri- wether Lewis, railroad tycoon James J. Hill, Chief Red Cloud of the Lakota Sioux — and extraordinary landscapes — Glacier Nation- al Park, the Northwest Angle, Washington’s North Cascades. He weaves in is encounters with residents, border guards, Indian activists and militia leaders to give a dynamic portrait of the northland today, wracked by climate change, water wars, oil booms and con- cerns over border security. Exploring Oregon’s Wilderness Areas Don’t forget that hiking bloggers, Bruce and Linda Hope, will be at the library on Saturday, May 11, at 1 p.m., when they discuss their vis- its to all 47 of Oregon’s federal wilderness ar- eas. Their blog, “Boots on the Trail” (bootson- thetrail.blog), features beautiful photos and maps of their year-round outdoor activities in Oregon and around the United States. In this library program they will cover highlights, with photos, of their visits to some of Oregon’s wilderness areas. Bruce and Linda, now based in Medford, have lived in Oregon for 25 years and have had careers in environmental toxicology and health care. Since retiring, they have spent their time on hiking, backpacking, rafting, snowshoeing, fiber arts projects and volun- teering at their local library. This program is great for active outdoors- men as well as armchair hikers. Perhaps you’ll come away with ideas for great new trails to hike this summer. May Art Display This month the library is pleased to pres- ent its spring Hang-It All art display, featur- ing “Things with Wings.” Interpretation of the theme was left up to the artists which has resulted in a wonderfully eclectic selection of art work on display: photography, water color, pottery, sculpture, jewelry and much more.
