Reading and play- ing bridge were his favorite indoor activities. Those who knew him loved his easy-going way with people, his quick smile and hearty laugh. He was al- ways up for fun, a challenge, an adventure — not to forget a cribbage game. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Eloise (Peters) Nelson, nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-neph- ews and their families, and many friends with fond memories and stories to tell about this extraordinary guy. He is sorely missed. A Celebration of Life cere- mony will be held in Minne- apolis on June 14, beginning at 10 a.m., at the Michael Servetus Unitarian Society, 6565 Oakley Drive, NE Frid- ley, Minn., 55432. MEAD—Penny Rober- ta Mead, 77, of Florence, passed away April 28, 2019. Penny was born May 30, 1942, in Illinois to Robert and Marie Dvorak. They moved to Florence, living near Mercer Lake. Penny received her bach- elor’s degree from Califor- nia State Poly-tech College San Luis Obispo, Calif. She enjoyed sailing (espe- cially t ippi ng the boat over), loved puzzles, picnics, Penny Mead potlucks a n d traveling with the RV club. She was chosen as RV activity director, where she planned programs and skits and wore silly costumes. One day when she was out on Mercer Lake, Penny met the local school principal and he was so impressed that he told her there was a job waiting for her if she wanted it. She always said that this was her first and only teach- ing interview! From that day on, Pen- ny won the hearts of school staff and children by bring- ing in boxes of kittens or bunnies, cooking and read- ing of other cultures, and making learning fun. She also taught line danc- ing, followed the Trail Blaz- ers and played bunko with friends. Penny was full of laughter and loved and cooked great food. Penny married Gary Sau- bert in November 1965; he passed away in November 2004 after 41 years of mar- riage. On Aug. 28, 2008, Penny married Loren Mead. He describes Penny as “per- fect in every way” as do his children, Lonnie, Susie and Alan, along with our fam- ilies. Penny’s final day was truly a perfect gift to the family. She gave us her smiles, laughter, and occasional ex- changes of “I love you’s” and a parting kiss. Penny left this world the evening of April 28, following surgery. She loved life and was loved by all. Burns’s Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Ballots should have arrived for May 21 election Additional delays have begun along Hwy. 126 Travelers should expect up to 20-minute delays on weekdays along Highway 126 between Florence and Eugene Highway for the next several weeks as crews replace bridge railings on a small bridge to the west of Fischer Road. Currently, one lane will be closed 24 hours a day during the week. Flaggers will direct traffic through the work zone. The road will be open on weekends. This is part of the High- way 126 Paving Project be- tween Veneta and Eugene that began last summer. Travelers may have a sec- ond stop as 24-hour lane closures continue at the passing lane project west of Walton. 24-hour lane closures end this Friday, May 10, at noon; weekday lane closures will resume on Monday, May 13. cated at the Florence Justice Center on Ninth Street. Drop boxes are open and will remain open until 8 p.m. on Election Day. This is the second elec- tion in which the new se- crecy sleeve is replacing the secrecy envelope that used to come with ballots. The optional sleeve allows vot- ers to protect the privacy of their votes while making the ballot processing more effi- cient. It is much faster to re- move ballots from the secre- cy sleeve than an envelope and, ultimately, Lane County Elections will be able to pro- cess ballots faster and release election results more quickly. Lane County Elections is located at 275 W. 10th Ave., on the corner of 10th and Lincoln streets in downtown Eugene. Public office hours are 9 a.m. to noon, and 1 to 4 p.m., Monday through Fri-day. On Election Day, May 21, the Lane County Elections Of- fice will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. 12:05 12:59 13:53 13:56 16:42 16:50 17:42 18:05 21:04 9:17 9:20 11:23 13:45 14:34 19:35 21:30 9:33 11:30 14:09 15:21 16:04 20:07 Area Type Hwy 101 Oak St Hwy 126 9th St Kingwood St 21st St 43rd St 9th St 9th St 9th St Spruce St 9th St Bay St Buckskin Bob 9th St Shorecrest Dr 9th St Waterford Downs Ct Rhododendron Dr Sunset Aprts 16th St 27th St SVFR Transport Transport to PHH OSP Transport Transport to PHH Transport to PHH Transport to PHH Transport to PHH Residence Transport to RB Residence Transport to PHH Transport to RB FPD Transport Transport to PHH Transport to RB SVFR Transport Transport to PHH SVFR Transport Transport to PHH Transport to PHH Transport to PHH Transport to PHH serving Florence and the surrounding area “ Our Family, Serving Your Family” Burial & Cremation Service • Onsite Crematory Columnbarium Spaces • Pre-need Planning Serving Lane, Douglas and Coos County Dunes Memorial Chapel 2300 Frontage Road, Reedsport, Oregon 97467 • 541-271-2822 Wear you Rhody Buttons to these local restaurants and get a free cup of chowder Bay Street Grille Clawson’s Wheelhouse* (*Rhody Weekend only) The Hukilau The Firehouse ICM Restaurant Traveler’s Cove buttons available at local merchants TheSiuslawNews.com Life‛s Short.
