It is written by Kevin Mittge Book Review “The Dreamers” by Karen Thompson Walker One night in an isolated college town in the hills of Southern California, a first-year student stumbles into her dorm room, falls asleep — and doesn’t wake up. She sleeps through the morning, into the evening. Her roommate, Mei, cannot rouse her. Neither can the para- medics, nor the perplexed doctors at the hos- pital. When a second girl falls sleep, and then a third, Mei finds herself thrust together with an eccentric classmate as panic takes hold of the college and spreads to the town. A young couple tries to protect their newborn baby as the once-quiet streets descend into chaos. Two sisters turn to each other for comfort as their survivalist father prepares for disaster. Those affected by the illness, doctors discov- er, are displaying unusual levels of brain activ- ity, higher than has ever been recorded before. They are dreaming heightened dreams — but of what? Written in luminous prose, “The Dreamers” is a breathtaking and beautiful novel, startling and provocative, about the possibilities con- tained within a human life — if only we are awakened to them. Author Karen Thompson Walker is the author of the previous New York Times best- selling novel “The Age of Miracles.” She is an assistant professor of creative writing at the University of Oregon. Exploring Oregon’s Wilderness Areas The library is pleased to host hiking bloggers Bruce and Linda Hope on Saturay, May 11, at 1 p.m., when they discuss their visits to all 47 of Oregon’s federal wilderness areas. Their blog, “Boots on the Trail” (bootsonthetrail.blog), features beautiful photos and maps of their year-round outdoor activities in Oregon and around the United States. In this library program they will cover high- lights, with photos, of their visits to some, but not all, of Oregon’s wilderness areas. Bruce and Linda, now based in Medford, have lived in Oregon for 25 years and have had careers in environmental toxicology and health care. Since retiring, they have spent their time on hiking, backpacking, rafting, snowshoeing, fiber arts projects and volunteering at their lo- cal library. This is the first public presentation they’ve done about their wilderness adventures. This program is great for active outdoors- men as well as armchair hikers. Perhaps you’ll come away with ideas for great new trails to hike this summer. A Universe of Stories “A Universe of Stories” is the theme of this year’s summer reading program for children, teens, and adults, and the excitement is build- ing! This theme was selected nationally to cele- brate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing. All kind of wonderful programs are planned and a lot of books will be read. Traditionally, summer reading programs are designed to encourage children to keep reading during summer vacation and avoid that “sum- mer slide” that happens before the new school year begins in September. The Siuslaw Public Library took that decades-long successful pro- gram for children and teens and added an adult component in 2010 so all library patrons can take part. Be sure to look for additional infor- mation in Tidings and at the library towards the end of May. Registration will start June 1. Ladies of Elks award annual scholarships The Florence Ladies of Elks have awarded a total of $15,000 in scholarships for the 2019-20 academic year. Students sub- mitted applications for judg- ing on the basis of scholastic achievement, leadership, moti- vation, extracurricular service and financial need. This year, all of the winners are students of Siuslaw High School. They are: Angela Bar- lett, $6,000; Alyssa Richards, $2,500; Joshua Smith, $2,500; Danielle Goldblatt, $2,000; and Naomi Shoji, $2,000. Scholarship certificates will be presented to the stu- dents during the Siuslaw High School Honors Night Program on Thursday, May 30, at the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St. The Ladies of Elks accumu- late the money for scholarships through their fundraising ac- tivities, such as the weekly Tuesday Bingo program held at the Elks Lodge, the annual hol- iday Bazaar and the upcoming Rhody Days Bake Sale.
