The vessel exams review a boat’s essential safety equip- ment to ensure that it is available and in full working order. Examiners follow a Coast Guard checklist of required and optional equipment so that the recreational boater can be safe and safety-con- scious on the water. Boaters whose vessels pass the voluntary exams receive a sticker and a record of the examination. Life jackets, fire extin- guishers, onboard visual dis- tress signals and much more are examined. U.S. Coast Guard statistics show that drowning was the reported cause of death in four out of every five recre- ational boating fatalities in 2017, and that 84.5 percent of those who drowned were not wearing life jackets. Dunes City seeks volunteers to help with annual triathlon, duathlon event in June Dunes City will host the 7th annual Oregon Dunes Triathlon and Duathlon on Saturday, June 8. In the meantime, Dunes City and event organiz- ers are seeking volunteers to help staff the loca- tions needed for support throughout the venue. School clubs, veterans’ organizations, communi- ty groups all are welcome. In addition, the City will award a $250 check to the group that brings the most volunteers on race day. Volunteers are essential each year to ensure that the races run smoothly and safely. Volunteers play a vi- tal support role for all of the participating athletes by providing encouragement, answering questions and being friendly faces of the community to athletes and visitors alike. Most volunteers work only a half day and all vol- unteers will receive a free commemorative t-shirt. Volunteers are needed be- tween approximately 6 a.m. and 1 p.m. on race day. Anyone with a few hours to spare who wants to be part of this exciting event can call Dunes City Hall at 541-997-3338 to sign up.
