SIUSLAW NEWS WEDNESDAY | APRIL 24, 2019 | 3A Community News 4th annual Big Wave Poetry Slam returning to Florence in May Florence’s 4th Annu- al Big Wave Poetry Slam, which sees poets travel to Florence from all over Or- egon and beyond, will take place on Friday, May 24, at 6:30 p.m. at the Florence Events Center, located at 715 Quince St. Slam poet extraordi- naire Jorah LeFleur will return for the fourth time as the master of ceremo- nies. Known as the “Slam Maven” and administrator and host of the Tsunami Poetry Slam in Eugene since 2006, LeFleur brings her bright, flashy style and a great energy to Florence’s special night of poetry. Slam Poetry is a type of competition where people read their poems without props, costumes or music. After performing, they re- ceive scores (0-10) from five randomly selected judges from the audience. Scores are awarded based on how much each judge likes a poem. Poets are allowed three minutes to read one poem of their own construction, with a 10-second grace period. If the poet goes over time, points will be deducted from the total score. There will be three Florence, Climate Alliance celebrate Earth Day appointed time keepers. Florence Big Wave Spo- ken Word is a group of po- etry lovers dedicated to the promotion and enjoyment of Poetry in Florence. A part of the Florence Regional Arts Alliance (FRAA), the group hosts the First Tuesday Open Mic plus three competi- tive events per year: “Big Wave Poetry Slam” in April, “Love Gone Wrong” in February and “Spooky Word” in October. Tickets and pre-regis- tration available at FRAA, located at 120 Maple St, or online at www.bigwaves- pokenword.org. Poets can also register at the event, which opens its doors at 6 p.m. This year’s Slam contest is limited to 20 participants with a $15 entry fee. First Prize $250, Second Prize $100, Third Prize $50. An Open Mic will pre- cede the Slam contest at 6:30 p.m. Audience admission is $10, $5 for Lane Commu- nity College students and free for anyone 18 and un- der. In 2019 we will be celebrating the 80th anniversary of our business in Florence. Maureen Miltenberger is the Chairperson of the Florence Environmental Management Advisory Committee for the city and coordinated the event for the alliance. “We are thrilled with how many people from the Florence area turned out in the cold and wind to experi- ence all of the hard work that the over twenty partici- pants put into this year’s event. WEDNESDAY THURSDAY APRIL 24 APRIL 25 “This year’s Earth Day theme of ‘Protect Our Species’ was evident in all of the booths including the beautiful butterfly picture that people got their pictures taken with and the bottle cap art project that was completed during the event by anyone who wished to help,” she said.
