On Saturday, April 20, in coop- eration with the Siuslaw National Forest and University of Oregon’s RARE (Resource Assistance for Rural Economies) program, the public is welcome to join ODRC volunteers in removing invasive Scotch broom from the John Dellenback trail and dunes area from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The work party will include dis- cussions about native grasses, dunes ecology, and possible resto- ration efforts. The John Dellenback trailhead is 20 minutes south of Reedsport on the westside of Highway 101, just south of Eel Creek Campground. Then on Saturday, April 27, in cooperation with Oregon State Parks, the public is welcome to join ODRC volunteers in removing invasive Scotch broom at the Dunes Day Use Area, Jessie M. Honeyman State Park from 9 a.m. to noon (Head south on Highway 101, turn right at Hon-eyman State Park then stay left at the junction for Dunes Day Use Area. Turn right and park at the Dunes Day Use Area.) For both events, volunteers are not required to pay the day use fees. Bring loppers, tree saws or shovels, and drinking water. Long pants, sturdy shoes, a hat and a snack are recommended. ODRC has a limited number of tools, so those needing tools to participate can contact Info @ SaveOregonDunes.org. ODRC thanks the Childs- Whitney Trust for the funds that were used to recently purchase the tools. For more information on these and other ODRC events, visit www. SaveOregonDunes.org. ODRC will have an informa- tional table at the “Earth Day at the Boardwalk Celebration.” This event is Saturday, April 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Port of Florence. ODRC will have brochures and volunteers will be available to answer questions. The book, “Restoring Oregon’s Dunes: The Bid to Save a National Treasure,” will be available for a $10 donation. It was recently honored as the Publication of the Year by the Public Lands Alliance. For more information concern- ing the award, visit www.Save OregonDunes.org. Boys & Girls Club preparing to host 22nd annual golf tournament fundraiser The ‘Fore Kids’ golf tournament will raise funds for its summer program and scholarships The 22nd anniversary of the Boys & Girls Club Fore Kids Golf Tournament hap- pens Saturday, June 1, at Ocean Dunes Golf Links in Florence. Studies show that students who don’t practice academic skills over the summer of- ten don’t retain what they’ve learned in school. Students from low-income fami- lies lose an average of two months reading achievement over the summer. By the end of fifth grade, disadvantaged children are nearly three grade levels be- hind their peers with higher incomes when it comes to reading skills. Two-thirds of the achieve- ment gap between lower and higher income ninth graders can be explained by summer learning loss. Summer matters because there is no other time of year in America when inequalities are greater. Almost 50 percent of the kids in the B&G Club Sum- mer Program are on program scholarships. These families are the families that don’t take vacations because there is no money to go. Over 500 youth are served by the Boys & Girls Club each year in Florence. The $89-per-player entry fee for the annual golf tour- nament fundrasier includes golf cart, hot dogs, beverages, awards barbecue, Hole-In- One Challenges and more. Check-in for pre-regis- tered participants, and on- site registration for remain- ing slots begins at 8 a.m., with the start of the tournament set for 10 a.m. The scramble-style tour- ney will feature hole-in-one challenges, closest-to-the-pin prizes on par-3 holes and a $5,000 putting contest. Entry forms are available at Ocean Dunes Golf Links, 3345 Munsel Lake Road, the Boys & Girls Club (1501 Air- port Road) or online at www. BGCWLC.org. In addition to golfing, there will also be the annual heli- copter golf ball drop fund- raiser at around 3:30 p.m. at Ocean Dunes on tournament day. The grand prize for the ball closest to (or in the hole) is $1,500; second prize is $800 for the ball farthest away from the hole. Numbered golf balls are $5 each. All proceeds from these two events will go to sup- port the Summer Brain Gain Program, a fun and engaging way for the club kids to re- duce summer learning loss. Not a golfer but want to help out? Consider sponsor- ing a child for the summer program. A donation of $100 sends a child to the summer program for a week, which includes two hot meals and a snack each day, fun-filled project-based activities em- phasizing math and literacy, and a field trip. For more information about the tournament, golf ball drop or how to sponsor a child for the summer pro- gram, call the Boys & Girls Club at 541-902-0304. Cel 70 ebrat + Y ing ear s!
