SIUSLAW NEWS | SATURDAY, APRIL 6, 2019 | 3A Community News Master Recyclers to hold member meeting The Master Recyclers will be having a closed meeting (members only) and potluck in the Siuslaw Pubic Library’s Bromley Room on Thursday, April 11, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Florence DAR chapter welcomes new members The meeting discussion will concentrate on listing projects, tasks and events for the coming year, as well as who will step in to fill the roles in coordinating those events. Library Friends to celebrate ‘Library Week’ April 7-13 The Friends of the Siu- slaw Public Library is cel- ebrating National Library Week next week, April 7 to 13. The library, which has two locations, 1460 Ninth St. in Florence and 88148 Riverview Ave. in Ma- pleton, offers a variety of books and materials, as well as free Wi-Fi, a bank of computers, meeting space and more, all for the free use of the public. The Friends of the Siu- slaw Public Library is cele- brating the library on Fri- day, April 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the lobby of the Florence branch. People are encouraged to stop by for cookies and punch — and get a free book. Although the communi- ty is welcome to celebrate the library all week, the Florence branch will be closed on Tuesday, April 9, while new windows are installed. The Mapleton branch will be open its regular hours, noon to 5 p.m. from Tuesday to Saturday. For more information about the library, visit www.siuslawlibrary.info. Dowty shared that sev- eral years ago a previously unknown second cousin contacted her wanting infor- mation about her immediate family as she put together a Sikes/Sykes family album. His ancestor was Richard Sikes, who emigrated from England around 1636. Sikes’ descendants included six who served in the American Revolution. “The love of God, country and American history are close to my heart and closely align with DAR Creed,” said Dowty. “I joined not only be- cause we all share a common ancestry, but I hope to learn even more about my history and that of my DAR sisters.” Gualco explained that her grandsons, who have served in the military, asked her to join because they were in- terested in family members who had fought in the Revo- lutionary War. “As I researched the ge- nealogy for membership, I found it interesting to see how many had served,” said Gualco. “Our direct line was a diverse group living throughout the Boston area”. Daughters of the Ameri- can Revolution was founded in 1890 and established in Oregon in 1896. The Oregon Dunes chapter celebrates its 11th birthday this month. As a non-political, lineage organization, DAR’s mission is to promote historic preser- vation through three Oregon museums, encourage educa- tion through youth programs and to celebrate patriotism through service to veterans and active-duty military per- sonnel. Any woman age 18 or old- er, regardless of race, reli- gion or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the Ameri- can Revolution is eligible for DAR membership. Soroptimists accepting scholarship applications The Florence chapter of Soroptimist International is offering several scholar- ships to graduating seniors in the Florence and Ma- pleton areas. Scholarships available include: • $3,000 Eugene and Thora Chin Scholarship Award Available to Western Lane or Douglas County residents planning to at- tend a college or universi- ty. • $1,000 Chigasaki Scholarship Award. Available to women who plan to attend a college or university with the goal of obtaining a degree or cer- tificate in a medically re- lated field. • $1,000 Professional Technical Award Available to anyone en- rolled in a professional or technical certificate pro- gram. “We encourage all se- niors to apply, even if they’re not sure what they want to go to school for fits into one of our schol- arship categories,” said Kat Rannow, Education Chair for Soroptimist of Flor- ence. “We understand that many students change vo- cations,” Applicants must have an accumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. Applications are available from school counselors at Siuslaw and Mapleton high schools. and are due by April 15.
