The experience and work ethic of our eighth-grade team is going to be fun to watch over the next few years in high school.” Eighth-graders Cayden Gray (95 lbs.), Ian Sissel (140 lbs.) and Jonathan Rose (175 lbs.) each claimed their first district titles, with Wyatt Tatum (132 lbs.) and Logan Wells (150 lbs.) claiming second-place medals. In the 6th- and 7th-grade division for SMS, Joel Sissel (110 lbs.), Elliot LaCosse (117 lbs.), Dayne Muller (132 lbs.), Cort Wagginer (140 lbs.) each landed first-place medals at district, along with second place for Cameron Groves (85 lbs.) and third place for Leo Robertson (95 lbs.) In their first year on the team, wrestlers Terry Elliot (110 lbs.), Dalton Mcgowan (102 lbs.) and Auston Potter (132 lbs.) placed third, fourth and fourth, respectively. The district tournament officially wrapped up the regular season for the pro- gram, “but some of the kids will continue on to regionals,” said Buss. “If they place within the top three at regionals, they will qualify for the Middle School State Wrestling Tournament, where the top 16 wrestlers in Oregon will compete for championship titles.” March 16 8:10am / 7.1 10:10pm / 5.9 2:11am / 3.6 3:29pm / 0.1 March 17 9:22am / 7.4 11:00pm / 6.4 3:29am / 3.2 4:27pm / -0.4 March 18 10:26am / 7.8 11:43pm / 6.9 4:33am / 2.5 5:18am / -0.7 March 19 11:24am / 8.1 5:29am / 1.7 6:04pm / -0.9 Kiwanis announces details for 2019 golf tourney Dick Shores, 2019 President of Florence Ki- wanis, has announced that the annual charity golf tournament will be held Saturday, June 22, at Ocean Dunes Golf Links. Tournament pro- ceeds will go to benefit the Kiwanis Doernbe- cher Children’s Cancer Program (KDCCP) and local youth programs. This is the second-annual tournament, build- ing on the success of last year’s tournament that raised funds for KDCCP and local programs, including The Boys and Girls Club, the 4Kids Back pack Program, and the Children’s Winter Concert. Tournament Chair, Lonnie Iholts, said Shores has even bigger plans and is hoping to improve on last year with more sponsors, better prizes for tournament winners, and an online auction with merchandise valued at more than $5,000. Last year, Kiwanis limited the field to 32 teams and plans to do the same this year. By keeping the number of teams down, and mak- ing significant improvements in the check-in process, the lines at check-in were minimal and the tournament play time was under four hours. “These are things that all tournament partic- ipants appreciate,” said Shores, who has helped coordinate more than 100 golf tournaments over his years in Florence — including 50 or so charity fundraisers.
