Library Tidings by Kevin Mittge Book Review “Washington Black” by Esi Edugyan George Washington Black, or “Wash,” an 11-year-old field slave on a Barbados sugar plantation, is terrified to be chosen by his master’s brother as a manservant. To his surprise, the eccentric Christopher Wilde turns out to be a naturalist, explorer, inventor and abolitionist. Author Robert Leo Heilman Myrtle Creek author Rob- ert Leo Heilman will be at the library on Saturday, March 16, at 1 p.m. to read from and discuss his latest book “The Children of Death.” The critically-acclaimed award-winning author pur- sues three unanswered ques- tions from his childhood. Growing up in a family in which his German-speaking grandparents had migrated to the U.S. from Russia during the first decade of the 20th century, he found himself wondering: Where had the Heilmans lived before they migrated to Russia? Why did they leave their home to settle there? And, most poignantly, what happened to the rela- tives who stayed behind in Russia? Heilman himself adds, “The title for my new book, ‘Children of Death,’ is not ex- actly a cheery, feel-good one. Much of the book involves the history of Russia, where my ancestors lived for one hundred years and the title refers to the terror famine of 1932-33 in Ukraine.” Mapleton Branch The Mapleton library is located at 88148 Riverview Avenue, in the Lion’s Club Building. His 7-year-old daughter is already laying out and designing kitchens — some of them quite unique — and his 2-year-old son knows his way around hammers and screwdrivers so well that his grandpa bought him his very own work- bench.
