On Friday, sophomore Elijah LaCosse (126 lbs.), junior Matthew Horrillo (220 lbs.) and senior Riley Jennings (170 lbs.) each were eliminated from com- petition. LaCosse lost his first two matches by fall, ending his chances to advance. In addition, Horrillo and both Jennings brothers lost their opening matches, with Ryan losing by fall to Estacada’s Sam Garrison, Riley losing by fall to Grayson Livingston of LaGrande and Horrillo losing by 6-4 decision to Kody Zemke of Madras. But all three went on to win their next bouts. At 170 pounds, Riley pinned Caleb Taylor of Molalla in 4 minutes, 20 seconds. Horrillo won in a tiebreaker round, 3-2, over Matthew Clark of Cascade, and Ryan defeated La Grande’s Keith Oswald, 3-2. Athletes were scored on run- ning, fielding and batting. This Thursday, coaches will meet to draft teams for T-ball, Rookies, Minors and Majors teams. The final day for late baseball reg- istration is Friday, March 8. Fee is $65 for T-Ball and $75 for all other leagues. Baseball games and soft- ball practice both begin the first week of April. Check the stocking sched- ule online for dates and locations of stockings. These early stockings include: Alder and Dune Lake, Cleawox, Lost Lake, Munsel Lake, Thissel Pond, Munsel Lake, Big Creek Reservoirs, and Olalla Creek Reservoir. Note: Olalla Reservoir is operated and owned by Georgia Pacific and is cur- rently closed due to low water and hazardous con- ditions. SIUSLAW RIVER: Winter steelhead Winter steelhead fishing on the Siuslaw has been slow with the recent high water but is improving as the river drops back into shape this week. The Whitaker Creek trap num- bers have been good the last two weeks indicating that fish are moving in the system. Fishing should be good as the river clears up this week and into the weekend. Lake Creek steelhead fishing has been fair this year so far. The river was in good shape over the weekend and should fish well this week. The major- ity of fish are being caught near and around Green Creek. Hatchery fish in the Siuslaw system return to Whitaker Creek (Siuslaw) and Green Creek (Lake Creek). Bobber fishing with bait/jigs, drift fishing, and casting lures are good techniques to catch a Siuslaw winter steelhead. Trout fishing in streams will reopen May 22. ALSEA RIVER: Winter steelhead Winter steelhead fishing improved on the Alsea with the recent rains and rise in river levels. Both bank and boat anglers are catching fish as the river drops back into shape this week. The numbers of fish captured in the Alsea Hatchery trap continue to be low but more fish should be on their way with the current condi- tions. The numbers of later returning right maxillary clipped fish should increase with each rain event for the rest of February through March. See FISHING 2B ODFW phone lines now open for hunter reporting SALEM—ODFW has increased the num- ber of staff available to take hunter reports by phone and en-courages hunters to report their big game or turkey tag(s) as soon as possible. Call 1-866-947-6339 (the reporting number printed on all 2018 tags) to report your hunt, or report online via MyODFW. com. As of today, more than 108,000 hunters still need to report hunt results, including for about 207,000 deer or elk tags which must be reported by April 15 to avoid a $25 penalty fee. ODFW extended the reporting deadline to April 15 this year (from Jan. 31) after hunters attempt-ing to call in and report their hunt by phone experienced longer hold times. The extension was also meant to give hunters more time to get familiar with ODFW’s new licensing system that launched Dec. 1, 2018. Any hunter who purchased a 2018 deer, elk, pronghorn antelope, cougar, bear or tur- key tag is re-quired to report their hunt results by April 15 — even if they were not successful or didn’t go hunting. Not reporting a deer or elk tag results in a $25 penalty (for 2018 tags, the penalty is as-sessed when pur- chasing 2020 hunting licenses).
