SN Sports & Recreation THESIUSLAWNEWS.COM SATURDAY EDITION | FEBRUARY 16, 2019 R ECREATIONAL CRABBING CLOSED ON SOUTHERN COAST The Oregon Department of Agriculture and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife announce the immediate closure of all recreational crabbing on the southern Oregon coast from Bandon to the California border due to elevated levels of domoic acid. This includes Dungeness and red rock crab harvested in bays and estuaries, and on beaches, docks, piers and jetties. Recreational crab harvesting from Bandon north to the Columbia River (including the Coquille river estuary) remains open in bays and estuaries, and on beaches, docks, piers and jet- ties. Meanwhile, for commercial crabbing, ODA and ODFW are requiring that all crab harvested from Bandon to the California border be eviscerated (gutted) before it can be deemed safe for consumption. Domoic acid levels are elevated only in crab viscera, or the guts, of crab sampled and tested from this area of the Oregon coast. For recreational crab harvest- ers, it is recommended that crab always be eviscerated prior to cooking, which includes removal and discard of the viscera, inter- nal organs, and gills. During these two days, no fish- ing licenses or tags (including a Combined Angling Tag or Columbia River Basin Endorsement) are required to fish, crab or clam anywhere in Oregon for both residents and non-residents. This time of year, the best opportunity will be winter steel- head on the coast, stocked hatchery rain- bow trout in the Willamette Valley and mid-coast lakes, and ice-fishing in north- east and southeast Oregon. Look for the latest on fishing conditions and regulations at ODFW’s Weekly Recreation Report, which is updated every Thursday. Also see the trout stocking schedule to find out when your local lake is getting stocked with hatchery rainbow trout. MID COAST LAKES: Stocking of the mid-coast lakes will begin the first week of February. Check the stocking schedule online for dates and loca- tions of stockings. These early stockings include: Alder and Dune Lake, Cleawox, Lost Lake, Munsel Lake, Thissel Pond, Munsel Lake, Big Creek Reservoirs and Olalla Creek Reservoir. SIUSLAW RIVER: Winter steelhead Winter steelhead fishing has still been good on the Siuslaw with the lower water. The Siuslaw holds a little bit of color even when it gets low which helps the fishing conditions. The numbers of fish returning to the Whitaker Creek trap have increased for the end of January and now into February. Fish are being caught every day with the best fishing around Whitaker Creek for both the bank and boat anglers. Lake Creek steelhead fishing has been fair this year so far. Currently, Lake Creek is low and clear cre- ating tough conditions and could benefit from some rain and a bump in the river level. Hatchery fish in the Siuslaw system return to Whitaker Creek (Siuslaw) and Green Creek (Lake Creek). Bobber fishing with bait/jigs, drift fishing, and casting lures are good techniques to catch a Siuslaw winter steelhead. Trout fishing in streams will reopen May 22, 2019. ALSEA RIVER: Winter steelhead Winter steelhead fishing has slowed down on the Alsea with the low and clear water conditions. Numbers entering the Alsea hatchery trap have slowed down as well.
