SIUSLAW NEWS | SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 2019 | 3A Community News Oregon Dunes DAR to present Community Service Award At the Friday, Feb. 22 meeting of the Oregon Dunes Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), the pro- gram includes the presenta- tion of a Community Ser- vice Award and a program on the Purple Heart. On Nov. 29, 2018, the Siu- slaw News published an arti- cle on Emma Maier for her effort to preserve headstones at Deadwood Cemetery. Her leadership effort attracted the chapter’s attention. Since historic preservation is one of the three main efforts of DAR, the chapter looks for- ward to acknowledging Em- ma’s accomplishment. After this award is given, DAR will learn about the Purple Heart. It’s unlikely that any sol- dier sets out to earn a Purple Heart. Yet, since this medal was first awarded by George Washington in 1782 as a “Badge of Merit,” nearly 2 million have been present- ed. This medal differs from most other decorations in that individuals are not “rec- ommended” for it. It can only be earned be- cause the recipient was killed or injured while serving un- der competent authority in any capacity with one of the U.S. Armed Services. Following Emma’s recog- nition, the chapter will fea- ture a program by members Mary Gill and Merilee Mul- vey sharing history about and notable recipients of the Purple Heart. Gill will share the story of her ancestor, Benjamin Russel Hari, who was awarded the medal. Gill will conclude with a genealogical look back at his ancestral story along with some original documents from his life and military service. Vintage burlesque show brings WWII-era glamour to Florence Pin-Ups On Tour, billed as “a good time for a great cause,” is a patriotic World War II-style stage revue com- ing to the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St., on Sunday, March 10. The Friends of the Florence Events Center are bringing the vintage bur- lesque and variety revue from Las Vegas to town for anyone with an ap- petite for the era’s nostalgia, including retired and active military veterans/ active duty personnel and their fam- ilies. From the moment guests enter the event, they will be treated to some- thing special. The nationally-touring troupe’s goal is to recreate the mag- ic of the Hollywood Canteen of the 1940’s as a club offering dancing, re- freshments and entertainment for ser- vice members on their way overseas. The afternoon matinee promises dancing showgirls, comedy, variety acts, soulful lounge singers, vintage candy girls and more than a few sur- prises. Performers include Los Ange- les- and Las Vegas-based comedians, singers and dancers. In-uniform color guard and ushers will be provided by local veterans’ organizations. With entertainment and atmosphere around every turn, attendees will feel like they stepped into another era. Vin- tage attire for the audience is encour- aged. “This is the G-rated family show version. You would feel comfortable bringing your mother to this show,” says Friends of the Florence Events Center President Kirk Mlinek. COURTESY PHOTO Pin-Ups On Tour will present a family-oriented variety show with danc- ing, comedy and vintage WWII-era entertainment. He added that the performance of the cast of four is centered on singing, dancing and comedy with little to no use of staging or props. According to their website, Pin-Ups On Tour “is committed to providing low or no-cost entertainment for vet- erans as part of our morale-boosting mission.” Proceeds from their shows go to support their work entertaining U.S. veterans inside and outside of VA hospitals. The show is Sunday, March. 10 at 2 p.m. at the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St. Advance tickets are avail- able at www.EventCenter.org or at the FEC box office for $20 (adults) and $10 (under 18). Admission for veterans and ac- tive-duty service members is free as the show’s producers’ way of saying “Thank you for your service.” Doors open at 1 p.m. and conces- sions will be available. Hildenbrandt artwork featured at OPB through February Florence Regional Arts Alliance (FRAA) is pre- senting the artwork of Ronald Hildenbrand in the lobby at Oregon Pacif- ic Bank in Florence during the month of February. Hildenbrand captures the expressions and move- ment of domestic animals and wildlife beautifully in his oil paintings. A founding member of FRAA, Hildenbrand is an exhibiting artist at the FRAA Art Center, 120 Maple St. in Historic Old Town Florence, as well as an original member of the Florence Public Art Com- mittee. His background in art is extensive, including at- tending the American Academy of Art in Chi- cago; working in graphic arts while serving in the military; working in pack- age and label design for an international company in San Francisco; owning his own art studio while living in Fairfield, Calif.; and be- ing featured on the popular Bay Area Back Roads tele- vision show for his mural designs and paintings.
