Library Tidings by Kevin Mittge Book Review “The Viking Wars” by Max Adams ties, depicted in glorious nar- rative fashion in “The Viking Wars.” “The Viking Wars: War and Peace in King Alfred’s Britain, 789-955” by Max Adams tells the history of Britain in the vi- olent and unruly era between the first Scandinavian raids in 789 and the final expulsion of the Vikings in 955. In 865, a great Viking army landed in East Anglia, pre- cipitating a series of wars that would last until the middle of the following century. It was in this time of crisis that the modern kingdoms of Britain were born. In their respons- es to the Viking threat, these kingdoms forged their identi- ties as hybrid cultures: vibrant and entrepreneurial peoples adapting to instability and op- portunity. Traditionally, Alfred the Great is cast as the central player in the story of Viking Age Britain. But Adams, while stressing the genius of Alfred as war leader, law-giver and forger of the English nation, has a more nuanced narrative approach to this conventional version of history. Stop by the reference desk to get your Reading Challenge punch card. “Saving Big Creek” Author Presentation Andrea Scharf, author of “Saving Big Creek,” will be dis- cussing her book at the library on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 1 p.m. “Saving Big Creek” is the story of a 40-year-long battle to save 186 acres on the cen- tral Oregon coast, between Yachats and Florence. The property provides habitat for elk, Coho salmon and the en- dangered Oregon Silverspot Butterfly. When an out-of-state devel- oper purchased the property and applied for a zone change in order to build a destination resort, local residents went into action, testifying at Lane County Planning Commis- sion hearings, petitioning the Board of Commissioners, fil- ing an appeal to the Land Use Board of Appeals and present- ing arguments against approv- al of Industrial Development Revenue Bonds to finance the resort. In the process, they ex- panded opportunities for citi- zens to have a say in local land use decisions. This is a great story of his- torical, environmental and political interest — don’t miss it!
