Local agencies team up
to help Coast Guard

Church and Florence Food
Share, a local food distri-
bution agency, teamed up
to raise funds for the local
Coast Guard personnel,
working without pay during
the recent government shut-
down.
In one week of fund-
raising, the church raised
$1,650. The donations went
to the Chief Petty Officers
Association to be dispersed
to Station Siuslaw.
As the shutdown has
ended for the moment, the
church has ended fundrais-
ing.
New Life Lutheran is a
small congregation made up
of mostly older members,
many of which are military
veterans.
“The people at Siuslaw
River Station are our peo-
ple, and we want them to
know we stand with them
in the same way they stand
with us,” said New Life Lu-
theran Pastor John Maas.
“We provided the financial
assistance, and Food Share
helped make the connection
with the Guard Station.”

Three Rivers Casino Resort is matching the Confeder-
ated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians’
donation to the United States Coast Guard for a total do-
nation of $5,000.
A check for $2,500 was dropped off at the Siuslaw News
specifically for Station Siuslaw River’s fund through the
Coast Guard’s nonprofit Chief Petty Officers Association.
The Confederated Tribes will be giving their check to the
North Bend Station of the Coast Guard.
“Even though the government reached a deal to reopen
earlier today, the Tribes and the casino are both com-
mitted to our local men and service women,” said Rich
Colton, Three Rivers Casino Marketing Director. “We ap-
preciate what the United States Coast Guard does for us
all here on the Oregon coast. We are honored that at this
time we can support them.”
Three Rivers was initially opened as a casino-only facil-
ity in 2004 and was expanded into a full-service resort in-
cluding the adjoining hotel in 2007. Owned and operated
by the Confederated Tribes of the Coos, Lower Umpqua,
and Siuslaw Indians, Three Rivers Casino Resort has

The Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua and
Siuslaw Indians are made up of three tribes (four bands):
two bands of Coos Tribes, the Hanis Coos (Coos Prop-
er) and Miluk Coos; Lower Umpqua Tribe; and Siuslaw
Tribe. The tribes trace their ancestry back to the aborigi-
nal inhabitants of the South-Central coast of Oregon.

City Club to hear about coastal conservation
City Club of Florence will
meet Thursday, Feb. 7, from
noon to 1 p.m., at Ocean
Dunes Golf Links, 3345

Attendees will hear about
the natural wonders of Or-
egon’s complex marine food
web when Paul Engelmeyer,
a respected coastal conserva-
tion voice, will speak about
“Coastal Conservation Issues
and Strategies, and the Land-
Sea Connection.”
Engelmeyer will talk about
efforts to protect forage fish
— the prey base for seabirds
— as well as the unique habi-
tat requirements for the ESA
listed Marbled Murrelet.
He has managed lands for

located in Alsea Bay, Bea-
ver Creek and Yaquina Bay.
Landscape conservation ef-
forts and partnership will be
discussed.
Engelmeyer will be draw-
ing upon his years of expe-
rience managing the Ten
Mile Creek Sanctuary (lo-
cated near Yachats) for the
Audubon Society of Portland
and on his service on Ore-
gon’s Ocean Policy Advisory
Council (OPAC), which has
developed a system of ma-
rine reserves and protected
areas for Oregon’s coast.

ant Bird Area (IBA), which
extends over 100,000 acres
from north of Yachats basin
to south of Heceta Head. He
will also share how the Ma-
rine IBA effort includes part-
ners from Baja to Barrow,
Alaska.
Engelmeyer’s update will
include the current status of
Oregon’s five marine reserves
as well as the Cape Perpetua
Marine Reserve and Seabird
Protected Area.
Engelmeyer has decades of
experience working in part-
nership to achieve conser-
vation goals, including the
Siuslaw Forest Stewardship
groups, which received the
2010 Two Chief ’s Partner-
ship Award. This award is
presented annually to a hand-
ful of projects by the Chiefs
of the U.S. Forest Service and
the USDA Natural Resourc-
es Conservation Service
(NRCS) to recognize exem-
plary efforts working across
both public and private lands
to promote conservation and
forest stewardship.
