The applications should demonstrate how the fund- ing would educationally, cul- turally, physically or civically improve the students or resi- dents of the area. Local authors to be celebrated at next ‘Midnight in Florence’ Literary Salon Writers on the River pres- ents its next “Midnight in Florence” Literary Salon on Saturday, Feb. 2, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the Flor- ence Regional Arts Alliance (FRAA), 120 Maple Street in Old Town Florence. Designed as convivial gatherings, literary salons celebrate local writers and the literary arts. Following the tradition of Gertrude Stein’s infamous 1920s Parisian salons show- cased in the movie “Mid- night in Paris,” the event spotlights local authors who talk about writing and share excerpts from their books. An Open Mic follows, during which writers of all levels and genres are invited to read, recite or sing ex- cerpts from their published or unpublished work. Bay area author, poet and storyteller Jack Karasch, a relative Florence newcomer, will appear as the “Featured Author,” sharing passag- es from “Mounting Olym- pus” and “The Copyist — Cezanne’s Shadow,” the latest of his nine novels. Hosted by FRAA cre- ative writing instructor and award-winning journal- ist-author Catherine J. Ro- urke, the salon is free and open to the public. A $5 do- nation is suggested to sup- port FRAA for providing the space and refreshments. Rourke will read an ex- cerpt from her journalism memoir, “Forgive Us Our Press Passes — Con-fessions of a Modern-Day Muckrak- er.” “Literary salons inspire, unite and celebrate all writ- ers while providing cultural enrichment and entertain- ment,” Rourke said. “Every- one is invited to join the fun.” Writers who wish to par- ticipate in the open mic must arrive at 6 p.m. to sign up. Woahink Lake Association to host ‘Winter Wonderland’ tomorrow The Woahink Lake As- sociation welcomes anyone interested in the Woahink Watershed to its winter gath- ering on Sunday, Jan. 27, be- ginning at 1 p.m. in the West Woahink Group Meeting Hall (Yurt) on Canary Road. Residents, seasonal visi- tors and others interested in issues related to the area are invited to join members for this free event. Cameron LaFollette, Exec- utive Director of the Oregon Coast Alliance (ORCA) will be featured speaker at the meeting. Members of the As- sociation will bring a dessert or favorite snack to share. The Association will provide lunch.
