SN Sports & Recreation THESIUSLAWNEWS.COM SATURDAY EDITION | JANUARY 19, 2019 Lady Sailors land Eagles for first win By Ned Hickson Siuslaw News Mapleton girls: 40 Eddyville girls: 25 Mapleton boys: 39 Eddyville boys: 46 After coming close several times, the Lady Sailors basketball team picked up their first league win at Eddville Tuesday night, dominating the Lady Eagles at both ends of the court. Mapleton claimed 22 steals and scored 24 rebounds. Meanwhile, they dou- bled their shooting attempts with 59 looks that paid off in 46 points — and a 15-point victory margin. Five-foot-nine-freshman post Evangeli- na Spradling had 4 blocks and 6 boards for Mapleton, and went 6-for-13 from the foul line. Freshman Jahala Blake, a 5-foot-7 post, grabbed 4 steals to go with 3 rebounds that helped secure the Mountain West League win, 40-25. In the boys’ match-up, 6-foot-2 sopho- more forward JJ Neece posted 24 points, along with 9 points from 6-foot-3 freshman forward AJ Moso. Mapleton kept things close throughout the game until the final three minutes, when Neece, along with brother Nate, fould out — leaving just four Mapleton players on the hardwood to finish the game. Eddyville was able to slip ahead in the closing minutes for a slim 46-39 win. Thursday, the Lady Sailors were at home to host Triangle Lake, with the Lakers (4-4, 9-9) taking the win, 48-18. In the previous match-up between the two teams, Triangle Lake won 48-11. This Tuesday, Mapleton will host Mo- hawk as the the Mountain West enters the final stretch of the league season. Freshman Brady Libby, soph- omore Hector Garcia and junior Matthew Horrillo each nabbed pins against their opponents, at 125 pounds, 160 pounds and 285 pounds, respectively. All three wrestlers got their wins in the second round. Garcia took Jacoby Simmons to the mat 40 seconds into the second round after falling behind 2-3. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” Maybe the rest of the sporting world could learn something from this motto Once again, I use the movie “Remember the Titans” as an example of lessons we can learn from being athletes. During halft ime of the fi lm’s climactic champion- ship game, Coach Boone tells his players they have done all they could and, Siuslaw boys: 40 Marist boys: 61 Both Siuslaw teams were on the road at Marist Tuesday night for the second game of the Sky-Em League season. In the girls’ match-up, the No-7 ranked Spartans were caught off guard by Siuslaw, which took and maintained the lead from start to finish, including an 8-point lead to start the fourth quarter, 31-23. Marist (2-0, 10-5) rallied hard, scoring 17 points in the quarter. Despite that effort, Siu- slaw still held a 3-point, 40-37 advantage with 6 seconds remaining in regulation. Then, at the 3-second mark, the Spartans drained a 3-pointer to tie the game at 40-40 and send things into overtime. Marist managed to outscore Siuslaw 11-5 in OT, nudging out the Vikings for a 51-45 win. Sophomore Lindsey Long led Siuslaw with 16 points — 11 in clutch shooting from the foul line. Sophomore Gracie Freudenthal scored 11 points and was a force defensively. Senior Alyssa Richards nabbed 10 points for Siuslaw. In the boys’ game, the Vikings kept things close throughout most of the first half, hold- ing Marist to just 17 points with just 5 minutes remaining before the break for a 17-17 tie. But the Spartans put together a 16-4 run heading into halftime to take a 33-21 lead. Siuslaw opened the third period with a long 3-pointer from senior Dylan Wynn to close the scoring gap to 9 points, but it was all Marist from there, with 14 Spartans eventual- ly scoring in the game for a 68-40 win. Senior Nick Swift and freshman Braydon Thornton led scoring for the Viks with 9 points apiece. Last night, Siuslaw was on the road at Marshfield (after press deadlines) to take on the Pirates. Tuesday, the Viks will travel to Elmira to face the Falcons. The boys’ game tips off at 5:45 p.m., fol- lowed by the girls at 7:15 p.m. Siuslaw’s next home game is Friday, when the the Vikings host Junction City.
