After what has been a busy
non-league season heading into
the beginning of Sky-Em League
play next week, the Lady Vikings
will wrap up pre-season play
today during the annual Sky-
Em/Skyline Crossover
Tournament today at Mazama
High School in Klamath Falls.
The official schedule has been
in flux since Wednesday of last
week, when tournament coordi-
nators had Siuslaw scheduled to
play Phoenix High School
tomorrow, according to the tour-
nament website as well as the
Oregon
School
Activities
Association (OSAA) website.
That apparently changed as of
Thursday night, with Sunday's
match-up between Siuslaw and
Phoenix moved to today at 12:30
p.m.
Last night, Siuslaw took on
North Valley (4-7), after press
deadlines, in hopes of improving
the Lady Vikings’ record to 5-8.
Results from that game and
today's game against Phoenix
will be available in Wednesday's
edition.
Friday, Siuslaw will officially
kick off league play against
Cottage Grove (5-6) at Glenn
Butler Court.
The Lady Vikings tip off at
7:15 p.m., with the boys’ game
being played first at 5:45 p.m.

Th e term “dumb Jock”
has been around for de-
cades. I heard it in the halls
of Warrenton High School
when I was a student there
in the 1960s.
I also heard it in the
halls of Siuslaw High
School while teaching
there for 32 years.
My son-in-law some-
times heard it in the halls
of Mapleton High School
while teaching and coach-
ing there. It is a stereotyp-
ing term, associated pri-
marily with male athletes,
in the same way “Nerds”
is a stereotyping term as-
sociated with high intelli-
gence.
So what do you call an
intelligent athlete?
I call them scholar ath-
letes.
Unlike years ago, today’s
athlete has to meet increas-
ing grade responsibilities
to remain eligible for their
sport. Th ey also must meet
college entrance standards
if they hope to continue
their athletic careers.
Athletes today realize
the importance of high-
er education, particular-
ly due to the fact that the

MID COAST LAKES:
Stocking of mid coast
lakes stopped in early
June, but fishing for
warmwater species can
still be good in several
area lakes, including
Ollala Reservoir,
Mercer Lake, Siltcoos
Lake and Tahkenitch
Lake.
SIUSLAW RIVER:
Fall Chinook, winter

Winter steelhead are
showing up on the
Siuslaw. Fishing has
been slow in December
but the recent rains will
bring in more fish as the
river drops into shape
later this week. Hatchery
fish in the Siuslaw sys-
tem return to Whitaker
Creek (Siuslaw) and
Green Creek (Lake
Creek). Bobber fishing
with bait/jigs, drift fish-
ing, and casting lures are
good techniques to catch
a Siuslaw winter steel-
head.
Trout fishing in
streams will reopen May
22, 2019.
