MARK BRENNAN/SIUSLAW NEWS The dock entrance near Mo’s now has a gate to restrict nigh- time use of the docks to moorage customers and residents. GATES from page 1A Issues surrounding un- wanted visitors have long been an issue with moorage customers, who often live on the boats that are anchored at the port. “People want their property a little more protected down there,” Huntington said. In February, gates were mentioned as a possibility after one moorage customer listed a litany of issues they had seen with unwanted vis- itors, including overnight campers, late night crabbers and skinny-dippers. “As a neighborhood we had issues with certain miscre- ants, primarily youth, who were giving our neighbors a hard time,” Commission- er Bill Meyer said during the meeting in response to the complaints. Meyer lives in an apart- ment building adjacent to the docks. But port staff was limited in how and when they could respond to complaints. The office is closed during the weekends and evenings. “We’ve never had the man- power and staff to enforce it at night, and [the complaints] come only at night, too,” Hun- tington said. Instead, Florence Police were tasked with respond- ing to incidents. The gates became the port’s only alter- native to maintain a peaceful atmosphere at night. “But it’s a safety issue as well,” Huntington added. “It gets dark down there on those docks, it’s not easy to see.” For example, some Fourth of July revelers would cram the docks with folding chairs in hopes to catch a better view of the annual river fireworks. “It’s a fire obstruction to have that many people on the docks,” Huntington said. But Huntington stressed that closing the docks during certain parts of the evening is not meant to deter visitors to the area. The docks are still open during the day, and “I do know people come on to visit their friends on the boats at night, and we’d never discour- age that,” he said. Residents will be able to give out the passcode in those situations. “We’ve just never been able to have enforcement before,” Huntingdon said. “I think this will help us out a lot, safety wise and staff wise.” All ethnicities are encouraged to audition for all roles which fit their age and skillset.
