Everyone is invited to stop by, light a can- dle and take time to focus on their intention for peace with- in themselves and throughout the world. The Amanda Trail was completed and dedicated in July 2009. A 35-year endeavor, the trail has helped reveal the truth about the treatment suf- fered by the Alsea, Siuslaw, Coos and Lower Umpqua peo- ple during their incarceration at the Alsea Sub-agency prison camp from 1859 to 1875. Since the trail’s dedication, the Confederated Tribes of the Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians (CTCLUSI) have become an important part of the Yachats communi- ty. CTCLUSI also provided financial aide and skilled labor toward the replacement of the initial pedestrian bridge along the Amanda Trail. More information about the tribes and early Yachats area history can be found from the History tab on www.yachats. info. It is through the Tribes and the community’s endeavors with the Amanda Trail that many have become more aware of the great need to acknowledge the wrongs of the past and to be more conscious of the need to treat people of all cultures throughout the world with honor, dignity and respect. Th ere are many reasons parents decide to teach their children at home. Th is deci- sion has responsibilities on behalf of all parties. Th e student, the school dis- trict, the parents, the coaches and the players on a team the student decides to try and be- come a member. Steelhead fishing remains open in the closed Chinook areas of the Siuslaw and Lake Creek. Due to lower than expected returns and conservation con- cerns, fall Chinook fishing on the Siuslaw remains closed upstream of the Tiernan boat ramp (downstream of Mapleton). Below the deadline the bag limit for fall Chinook is reduced to one adult Chinook per day and a limit of 3 through the remainder of the season. Chinook fishing continues to be slow in the open area. All wild coho must be released for the 2018 fall salmon season. Lake Creek, a tributary of the Siuslaw River, is closed for the 2018 fall salmon season. Trout fishing in streams will reopen May 22, 2019. ALSEA RIVER: Fall Chinook, winter steelhead Winter steelhead fishing has begun on the Alsea River. The popular North Fork Alsea fishery opened on Dec. 1. Fishing has been slow so far, the river is low and clear and water temperatures have dropped with the cold nights and east winds. During these conditions, the lower Alsea can be good as fish slow their migration and spend more time lower in the system. Expect things to pick up this week with the change in weather and more rain in the forecast. The Alsea still gets a good amount of the early returning stock that peaks in December and January, as well as a later stock that peaks in February and March. Expect more fish to show up with each rise in the river level from now through April. Bobber fishing with jigs/bait, drift fishing, and casting lures are all effective ways to catch these hard fighting fish. Reminder: Winter steel- head fishing remains open in the areas closed to Chinook. When fishing for winter steelhead remember to prac- tice good ethics and leave spawning Chinook and coho salmon alone so they can provide fish for the future. Due to lower than expect- Home schooled children are not just joining athletics, they are allowed to join any extra-curriculum activities available to students in the district. Th e Oregon Department of Education and the Oregon School Activities Association have rules governing the par- ticipation of home-schooled children. All parents must fi ll out an eligibility form prior to the beginning of the school year. A home-schooled student in- terested in participating in any activities for the school — and only the school in their district — must pass an achievement test before Aug. 15 of the school year. Th ey must also attain a minimum score in the 23rd percentile. If the student becomes inel- igible during any sport season, they will be unable to partici- pate in any activity until the following school year. So, as you sit and watch this new athlete take the place of your son or daughter on the team and think it is un- fair, think again. Th is person and their parents have made a decision in the best interest of their child to further their education. Trout fishing in streams will reopen May 22, 2019. SALMON RIVER: Fall Chinook, winter steelhead Winter steelhead fishing opened on Dec. 1. The Salmon River has no hatchery releases and is entirely a wild run. These fish will start to enter the system in December but the peak is January through March. Bobber fishing with jigs/bait and casting lures are great techniques to catch a Salmon River winter steel- head. Fall Chinook fishing is winding down on the Salmon River. Due to lower than expected returns and conser- vation concerns, Chinook fishing above the Salmon River hatchery is closed for the remainder of the 2018 season. Below the deadline the bag limit for fall Chinook is reduced to one adult Chinook per day and a limit of 3 through the remainder of the season. All wild coho must be released during the 2018 fall salmon season. Trout fishing in streams will reopen May 22, 2019. SILETZ RIVER: Winter steelhead Winter steelhead are start- ing to show up in the Siletz River. It is still a little early for the Siletz but the winter steel- head fishing will continue to improve as we get into January, which is typically when things heat up and continue through March/April. Side drifting, bobber dog- ging, bobber fishing with jigs, and casting lures are all great techniques to catch winter steelhead. When fishing for winter steelhead, leave spawn- ing Chinook and coho alone so they can provide fish for the future.
