Library Tidings by Kevin Mittge Book Review “The Rain Watcher” by Tatiana de Rosnay Linden Malegarde has come home to Paris from the U.S. It has been years since the whole family was all together. Now the Malegarde family is gath- ering for the 70th birthday of Linden’s father, Paul. The members of the Malegarde family are on edge, holding their breath, afraid one wrong move will shatter their delicate harmony. Paul, the quiet patriarch, an internationally renowned ar- borist obsessed with his trees and little else, has always had an uneasy relationship with his son. Lauren, his American wife, is determined that the weekend celebration will be a success. Tilia, Linden’s blunt older sister, projects an air of false fulfillment. And Linden himself, the youngest, un- comfortable in his own skin, never quite at home no matter where he lives — an American in France and a Frenchman in the United States — still fears that, despite his hard-won success as a celebrated pho- tographer, he will always be a disappointment to his parents. Their hidden fears and se- crets slowly unravel as the City of Light undergoes a stunning natural disaster and the Seine bursts its banks and floods the city. All members of the family will have to fight to keep their unity against tragic circumstances. In this profound and intense novel of love and redemption, de Rosnay demonstrates all her writer’s skills not only as an incredible storyteller but also as a soul seeker. Hang-It All Winners If you haven’t had a chance to see the winners of this year’s Hang-It All art display, be sure to stop by the library during the month of Decem- ber. The winner of the Bob Kutsch Award is Craig Shreeve with his “Dramatic Depiction of Heceta Head Lighthouse.” The People’s Choice Award went to Jerry Schneider for his “Chestnut Visitor.” Congratulations to both winners and to all those who participated! This year’s theme to expand for third-annual Women’s March Florence ORganizes (FOR), a local organization that ad- dresses the needs of the com- munity through the four areas of health care, environment, public education and hu- man rights, is sponsoring the “Women’s Wave” march on Saturday, Jan. 19. The event is also a fund- raiser for “Heart of the Coast” Housing Alliance. The march starts at noon at the Florence United Methodist Church, 333 Kingwood St. There will be a lunch and celebration afterward at the Florence Senior Center, 1570 Kingwood St., at 1:30 p.m. The Florence Women’s March is in collaboration with the national Women’s March, which promotes equal rights, economic equity for women, and health care for women and families. The celebration/fundrais- er will support and promote the new “Heart of the Coast” Housing Alliance to help FOR bring affordable housing to Florence. During the event, there will be a silent auction, including items and services from lo- cal businesses. The lunch will have food from local restau- rants.
