Presbyterian Church to hold Longest Night, Blue Christmas Service Dec. 21 The Presbyterian Church of the Siuslaw will hold a Longest Night/Blue Christmas service at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 21, in the church Sanctuary. The name comes from the season, as Dec. 21 is the winter solstice and will be the longest night of the year. This is also sometimes known as a Blue Christmas Service, de- scribing the feeling that a num- ber of us have during this sea- son. In the long, dark winter nights, memories of past expe- riences and the pain of pres- ent circumstances can become overwhelming. For some, the Christmas season is a difficult time. Some may be grieving the loss of a loved one, struggling with illness or dealing with oth- er losses. This will be a service of wholeness and healing. Those looking for comfort, hope, wholeness and renewal are wel- comed and invited; as well as anyone wishing to share in an intimate, contemplative ser- vice using scriptures, readings, meditations, hymns and Taizé music. In a small worship center sur- rounded by chairs, participants may light candles for prayers. Rev. Greg Wood will lead the service. The church is located at 3996 Highway 101 in Florence. Call the church office with ques- tions, 541-997-7136. Unitarians to explore meaning of ‘advent’ The service on Sunday, Dec. 9, at the Florence Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will be led by the Rev. Dr. Ruth Miller. During the service, which runs from 10 to 11 a.m., Miller will speak about the “Advent Sea- son.” “Advent” means “coming to- ward.” Miller looks to explore the meaning of the word while looking to several questions related to it: “What’s com- ing toward us? What are we coming toward? Why is this the name of the days leading up to Dec. 25? What does it mean for us now and in the fu- ture?” The fellowship is located at 87738 Highway 101 at Heceta Beach Road and is wheelchair accessible. Each service con- cludes with refreshments and a dialogue circle to explore the questions that come up during each worship service. For more information, visit www.florenceuuf.org. This Monday, Dec. 10, at 6:30 p.m., Dr. I. Walter Tu- nick, Ed.D. will discuss his book “Spiritual Journey: The Bahá’í Faith.” The evening will be an ef- fort by Tunick to acquaint participants with the mes- sage of the Bahá’í Faith, its history and its principles. Walter states that the de- teriorating moral conditions that are spreading global- ly have caused devastating gaps in social behavior that endanger the well-being of all societies and nations. The growth of interest in mor- al and religious values has been stirring calls to action among the established reli- gions. The Bahá’í Faith, claiming hereditary connections with its older sister religions, of- fers relevant explanations for current world problems that do not conflict with the earlier teachings. People should come pre- pared to share their thoughts with the group. At the end of the gather- ing, the members will read the prayer requests that have been left in the Prayer Pole in the garden of the Florence Playhouse, 208 Laurel St. Children’s choir prepares for ’Joyful Noise’ concert Dec. 9 The Joyful Noise Children’s Choir is excited to invite the Florence community to their holiday production, “The Christmas Express.” The show will be presented on Sunday, Dec. 9, at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. at the Florence Chris- tian Church, located at Second and Ivy streets.
