City of Florence recruiting volunteers for openings on EMAC Several of Florence’s com- mittees and commissions have open positions for area volun- teers. Sustaining and improving the City of Florence’s livabili- ty and quality of life is Goal 2 of the City of Florence Work Plan. The Environmental Man- agement Advisory Committee (EMAC) realizes Goal 2 by de- veloping local strategies and ad- vising Florence City Council on protecting the city’s health and environment and conserving its energy and natural resources. Visit us on the web T HE S IUSLAW N EWS . COM The committee is responsible for regulating the solid waste code, ensuring compliance with DEQ recycling education requirement and serving as the city’s Tree Board. EMAC is comprised of 11 citizen members and additional ex-officio non-voting members. The city is recruiting applicants to fill five openings for voting positions on the committee. EMAC generally meets once per month as a group. Persons interested should expect to at- tend recurring meetings and devote time for study of issues and performance above and be- yond meeting attendance. Vol- unteer time is vital in working towards solutions to local gov- ernment issues. If you are interested in serv- ing the Florence community and getting involved, consider applying for one of the open positions on EMAC. The dead- line for applications is Dec. 31, so apply today. Positions are set to begin on Feb. 1, 2019. Applying for a position is easy. Applications can be down- loaded from the City’s website at www.ci.florence.or.us and are available at the Florence Public Works Facility, 2675 Kingwood St., during regular business hours. For details regarding the duties and responsibilities of EMAC, residency requirements of applicants, term lengths or any other questions, contact City Recorder/Economic De- velopment Coordinator Kelli Weese at 541-997-3437 or kelli. weese@ci.florence.or.us. ‘White Elephant’ exchange at next PFLAG meeting PFLAG Florence will add some frivolity at its regular meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 11 with a “White Elephant” gift exchange. The celebration will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Bromley Room of the Siuslaw Public Library in Florence, located at 1460 Ninth St. “White elephants,” loose- ly defined, are silly, useless or surprisingly good things peo- ple have in their “I’ll-never- use-this” drawer. Craft items, canned goods, or fun-but-not expensive items (not to exceed $5 in price) can also be in the mix. Simply wrap the “white ele- phant” and have fun as selec- tions are made – and “trading” takes place. Can’t bring an item? No problem. A few “ex- tras” will be on hand. The public is invited, and re- freshments will be served. There will be a special prize for the person who brings the greatest number of guests. ' Hint: the prize is paper and it’s sponsored by a government entity.
