SIUSLAW NEWS | SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 2018 | 3A G ENERAL N EWS Confederated Tribes announce 2018-19 Charitable Giving Cycle The Three Rivers Foun- dation, the giving arm of the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua & Siuslaw Indians has an- nounced its next grant cy- cle will begin Dec. 1. The Foundation, estab- lished in October 2011 and funded by proceeds from the Three Rivers Casino Resort in Florence, is inter- ested in supporting inno- vative ideas, collaborative approaches and grassroots efforts in the following areas: education, health, public safety, problem gam- bling, the arts, the envi- ronment, cultural activities and historic preservation. Interested parties are in- vited to review grant crite- ria and access an electronic SHS students creating art for a good cause application at the founda- tion’s website at www.three- riversfoun dation.org. Grant applications for this giving cycle will be ac- cepted from Dec. 1 through 5 p.m. on Dec. 31. Nonprofit organiza- tions with 501(c) (3) des- ignations and government organizations located in Coos, Curry, Douglas, Lane or Lincoln Counties are en- couraged to apply. Additionally, applications from other Oregon non- profit organizations with projects specifically im- portant to Native American populations, projects that have “statewide impact” in Oregon, or other federally recognized tribes are also welcomed. Most bowls are priced at $10 each, with a coupon for a free bowl of soup from participating restaurants accom- panying each bowl sold. A silent auction is also available for attendants to participate in. Through the Empty Bowls event, ceramics students are not only learn- ing how to create handcrafted ceram- ic bowls, they are also learning how to give back to their community in a unique way. This project has helped raise their awareness of the needs of others and how they might assist in meet-ing those needs. The 23rd Annual Empty Bowls fundraiser will be held at the Florence Events Center Nov. 30 through Dec. 2, with all proceeds to benefit Florence Food Share. Admission is free and open to the public. Siuslaw High School Art Instructor Kim Pickell is busy preparing her ceramics students for another year of participation in the annual Empty Bowls fundraiser to benefit Florence Food Share. This year, more than 17 Siuslaw High School students will be involved in the production of handmade ceram- ic bowls for the 23rd annual Empty Bowls Fundraiser. Both artists will be featured at a reception at FRAA on Saturday, Dec. 8, during the Second Saturday Gallery Tour from 3 to 5 p.m. The community is invited to come and meet these two talented artists, while enjoy- ing holiday refreshments. Pfaff is a 14-year-old ninth-grader who is home- schooled. He discovered his favorite medium one summer while doing yard work for a friend, who introduced him to a form of art called Zentangle. This is basically a stress re- lieving form of drawing that uses repetitive patterns. As Pfaff says, “When my friend told me about it, I was instantly hooked, and I have been doing it ever since. I have also started a Facebook page for Zentangle enthusiasts, which is called ‘Florence Area Zentangles.’” Pfaff ’s media of choice in- clude Micron pens and Pris- macolor pencils. He really en- joys using color. “Zentangle provides me with a creative outlet that I hope others will enjoy as much as I do,” he said. Carhart was raised in La- guna Beach, Calif., which is a small town known as “The Artist Colony.” Graduating from high school with a Festival of Arts Scholarship Award, she then attended the University of Idaho. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in textiles and fibers, and a minor in Cultural Anthropol- ogy. She also served as a mem- ber of the Peace Corps for two years in the Caribbean as an art teacher and Program Art Developer. After retiring to Florence with her husband three years ago, she became a member of FRAA, where she displays her work, and serves as a volun- teer. “For me, art is a passion.
