Both pro- grams are part of Vision Quest’s “Get Wild” series and are the grand finale of the 2018 “Get Wild” sea- son. The first adventure program, “Kayaking Around Florence,” begins at 10:30 a.m. and will feature local kayaker and photographer Mary Nulty. An avid paddler of both kayaks and canoes, Nulty has been enthu- siastically enjoying and photo- graphing the area’s lakes and water- ways since 1994. She will share her passion for self-propelled water- craft by highlighting favorite local paddling sites, recreation passes/ permits needed to launch at each location, and by describing the dif- ferent types of kayaks and canoes available and how to effectively transport them to a destination. Nulty will also offer tips for safe boating including any tidal and weather impacts to consider when planning a local kayaking or canoe- ing adventure. The morning pre- sentation will be full of valuable information for both the aspiring and experienced paddler. The afternoon adventure pro- gram begins at 1:30 p.m. and will feature author Susan Marie Conrad whose book “Inside: One Woman’s Journey Through the Inside Passage” is a powerful memoir of her 2010 solo 1,200-mile kayak journey through the Inside Passage. Conrad’s journey from Anacortes, Wash., to Juneau, Alaska, was full of physical and personal challenges, a journey that changed her life. Milbry Polk, co-author of Women of Discovery said of this epic jour- ney, “It is a brave story. One of personal triumph, of heart break, terrifying challenges, soulful intro- spection and sheer joy.” Conrad has been involved in the paddlesports industry for 25 years. She teaches both on the water and in classrooms. Not only does Conrad explore the natural world from her kayak, she also hikes, See QUEST 2B Nov. 25 2:24am / 6.8 1:29pm / 8.3 7:42am / 3.1 8:36pm / -1.1 Nov. 26 3:19am / 6.7 2:22pm / 7.9 8:38am / 3.3 9:29pm / -0.7 S IUSLAW N EWS 148 Maple St. Florence 541-997-3441 New ‘Play Day’ set for Siuslaw Region families, residents Siuslaw Vision invites communi- ty members of all ages to attend evening of free fun, games and parks and recreation activities, on Thursday, Nov. 29, from 5 to 7 p.m. This event, “Siuslaw Play Day 1.2,” will be held at the Mapleton Lions Club building, 88148 Riverview Ave., in Mapleton.
