SIUSLAW NEWS | WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2018 | 5A Library Tidings News about the Siuslaw Public Library Speak your peace. Write a Letter to the Editor. Editor@TheSiuslawNews.com Library Tidings, a regular feature of the Siuslaw News, features news about upcoming Siuslaw Public Library pro- grams for adults and children, new books and videos, and other library news of interest to the community. Library Tidings by Kevin Mittge Book Review “What to Read and Why” by Francine Prose In this brilliant collection, the follow-up to her bestseller “Reading Like a Writer,” the distinguished novelist, liter- ary critic and essayist Francine Prose celebrates the pleasures of reading and pays homage to the works and writers she admires. In an age defined by hyper connectivity and constant stim- ulation, here is a compelling case for the solitary act of reading and the great enjoyment it brings. In- spiring and illuminating, “What to Read and Why” includes selections culled from Prose’s previous essays, reviews and introductions, combined with new, never-before-published pieces that focus on her favorite works of fiction and nonfiction, on works by masters of the short story, and even on books by pho- tographers such as Diane Arbus. Prose considers why the works of literary masters such as Mary Shelley, Charles Dickens, George Eliot and Jane Austen have endured, and shares in- triguing insights about modern authors whose words stimulate our minds and enlarge our lives, including Roberto Bolaño, Karl Ove Knausgaard, Jennifer Egan and Mohsin Hamid. Prose implores us to read Ma- vis Gallant for her marvelously rich and compact sentences and her meticulously rendered char- acters who reveal our flawed and complex human nature; Edward St. Aubyn for his elegance and sophisticated humor; and Mark Strand for his gift for depicting unlikely transformations. Here, too, are original pieces in which Prose explores the craft of writing. Written with sharp critical analysis, wit and enthusiasm, “What to Read and Why” is a celebration of literature that will give readers a new appreciation for the power and beauty of the written word. Ali Sarlak to speak at next Rhody Society meeting The Siuslaw Chapter of the American Rhododendron So- ciety will meet Tuesday, Nov. 20, at the Presbyterian Church of the Siuslaw, 3669 Highway 101, in Florence. Meet for refreshments at 6:30 p.m., followed by the pre- sentation at 7 p.m. Speaker Ali Sarlak is origi- nally from Iran (Persia), and said, “I am sure we all have been hearing on the news at least the name, Iran, but you might see and get a different prospect of my birth country Iran, I hope after my talk.” Sarlak has lived in Corval- lis for almost 40 years, where he owns and operates a small landscape business. He became interested in rhododendrons and was president of the Cor- vallis chapter for one term and of the Eugene chapter for two terms. Sarlak has attended many national and international con- ferences on rhododendrons, and he has visited some of our members on occasion. He traveled to Iran to revisit the beautiful mountains and alpine flowering plants he remem- bered from his childhood. He saw many plants that are found only in that region of Iran. Sarlak said he thinks the landscape, geology, geography, scenery, culture, history and people are fascinating, and he is eager to share his pictures and experiences with attend- ees.
