The five seniors — Riley Jennings, Tim Lowder, Jordan Taniguchi, Sam Testa and Eryk Rottman — stood in stark contrast to the The Bulldogs, whose senior roster outnumbered Siuslaw’s 3-to-1 with 15. In addition, the Vikings were being led from the pocket by freshman Camp LaCouture, who left the game with an injury by halftime and was replaced by fellow freshman Beau Erickson. Starting quarterback sophomore Elijah Blankenship was unable to start due to an injury the previous week at LaPine. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs took an early 45-0 lead by the end of the sec- ond period on the arm of senior QB Cade Meisner and senior runningback Bryce Anderson, as well as junior wide receiver Mason Gill. But as the Vikings have done all season, they continued to battle. Play by play. Yard by yard. Start to finish. Eventually, it culmi- nated in two touchdowns late in the fourth quarter — first on a 22-yard breakaway run by sophomore run- ningback Skyler Loomis. Then, on the ensuing kick-off, the Vikings recovered a fumble that put them on the 50-yard line. From there, Siuslaw moved the ball on five plays to the 1-yard line, where sophomore run- ningback Hector Garcia plowed his way into the end zone with just 30 seconds on the clock. Erickson found Loomis on a pass for the conversion and final score, ending the game — and season — with a solid sign that the spirit of Viking football is alive and well in this group of young players. Sunday, another sign of Siuslaw’s future potential was given with the announcement of four all-league hon- ors for Siuslaw. LaCouture was given honorable mention as both a running- back and linebacker by coaches in the 3A Special District 2 North. Garcia was given honorable mention at line- backer, Blankenship was named sec- ond team at defensive back, and Jennings also made second team, as a defensive lineman. The Viks finished the season at 0-5. Sailors end football season on high note against Mohawk By Ned Hickson Siuslaw News Mapleton: 50 Mohawk: 8 Though Mapleton's football season officially ended a week earlier at Elkton, the Sailors were back on the gridiron at home last Friday for a non-league match-up with the Special District 1-North’s fifth-place Mustangs of Mohawk. The game between the two fifth- place teams had no impact on stand- ings and was essentially an exhibition contest, which the Sailors dominated from start to finish in a 50-8 victory. Mapleton, 1-4 in the Special District 1-South, will not advance into the post season. Lowell went undefeated (5-0), fol- lowed by Elkton (4-1), North Douglas (3-2), Yoncalla (2-3), Mapleton (1-4) and Oakridge (0-5). St. Paul won the Special District 1-North at 6-0, followed by Falls City/ NED HICKSON/SIUSLAW NEWS Kings Valley Charter (5-1), Siletz Mapleton sophomore JJ Neece runs Valley (4-2), Perrydale (3-3), Mohawk into the end zone for the Sailors.
