Give-Away select free pumpkins provided by KCST Radio, which will celebrate its 30th year of the event on Thursday, Oct. 25 On Thursday, Oct. 25, from 3 to 5 p.m., KCST/KCFM Coast Radio will again pres- ent area kids and families with the Great Pumpkin Give-Away, an annual tradition now in its 30th year. Pumpkins will be handed out by Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue volunteers at 4 p.m. An estimated 3,000 pounds of pumpkins will be given away, with most of them gath- ered in a 15-minute period. Definitely make sure you are not late because once they are gone, they’re gone. Thirty years ago, KCST began handing out free pumpkins to local children to cel- ebrate its first anniversary on the air. That tradition will continue with the assistance of the Lemhouse family and Florence True Value, Old School Furniture and the Saw Shop. Companies that offer Medicare programs make changes in rates, co-pays, deductibles, drug lists and provisions each year. Consumers should receive informa- tion about the 2018 plans by Oct 1, in time to review them before Annual En- rollment. Local SHIBA (Senior Health Insurance Benefits Assistance) coun- selors are gearing up for appointments to be held most Fridays during Annual Enrollment in the computer lab at the Florence campus of Lane Community College. SHIBA counselors meet with indi- viduals to personally assist with Medi- care choices, problems, enrollments, and questions. Florence Chamber announces 2018 photo contest, prize The Florence Area Cham- ber of Commerce is looking for the best amateur or profes- sional photos of the fun, frol- ic, famous attractions, iconic buildings and beautiful scen- ery of Oregon’s Coastal Play- ground. The winner will collect a $250 cash prize and have their submitted photo featured in the Chamber’s resource guide and other printed marketing pieces, on its website and in social media. A panel of Chamber mem- bers will decide the winner. “We call this place Oregon’s Coastal Playground for a rea- son,” said Bettina Hannigan, the Chamber’s executive di- rector, “so we’re looking for outstanding amateur or pro- fessional photos that convey TheSiuslawNews.com our coastal playground theme. Download your best pho- tos from your smartphone or camera and send us your highest resolution photos showing the best of Oregon’s Coastal Playground with you and your family having fun here,” she added. Photos must be taken with- in 25 miles of Florence to be eligible. The contest is open to Florence area residents and visitors from all over the world. Amateurs and professionals alike are encouraged to en- ter. Portrait-oriented photos stand the best chance of being used in print media, though landscape-oriented photos are just as encouraged. Ideal photos will be in .jpg format, color, vertical in ori- entation (but horizontal will be accepted). Preferred size is 1920x1080 pixels, and 8MP, if possible. Deadline for entry is Nov. 15, with the winner being announced the week of Nov. 19. Yachats to host annual Mushroom Festival Oct. 19-21 Yachats will host its 19th an- nual Village Mushroom Fest, which runs from Friday, Oct. 19 through Sunday, Oct. 21. The festival offers a full week- end of cultivated culinary and wild forest mushrooms dishes, culinary markets and the op- portunity to learn about mush- rooms. There will be a variety of talks, workshops, guided walks, demonstrations and book sign- ings, as well as a large display of mushrooms staffed by three mycological societies. Indoor and outdoor markets will feature fresh and dried, wild and exotic mushrooms, as well as mushroom tools, books and mushroom-themed items at village shops and galleries.
