After opening with a
win at home a week earlier,
the Mapleton Sailors foot-
ball team was on the road
at Riddle last Friday to
take on The Irish.
Mapleton got another
standout performance
from sophomore JJ Neece,
who carried the ball 20
times for a total of 258
yards rushing.
Neece also connected
on 4 of 7 passes, including
three touchdowns for the
Sailors.
Senior Evan Moso
claimed 93 yards on for
receptions, and also rushed
for 54 yards against the
Irish, scoring 5 touch-
downs in the process.
Defensively, Neece led

Despite the effort,

Siuslaw: 00 00 00 08 — 08
Philomath: 00 21 12 00 — 33
The old adage “no pain, no gain”
seems befitting of this year’s Siuslaw
football team, which appears deter-
mined to gain a little more with each
knock and bump on the field.
Friday’s home game against
Philomath was a prime example of that
determination from an underclass-
man-dominated line-up which, after
experiencing success at the middle
school level, is eager to bring that suc-
cess to the varsity gridiron.
In its first two games — much like the
season is likely to play out — Siuslaw
has spent the first three quarters gutting
things out before eventually putting
those lessons together late in the game

and finding success.
A week earlier, the Vikings were
dominated by Elmira in a 68-point loss
to the Falcons. Last Friday, Siuslaw cut
that loss ratio to just 25 points, includ-
ing holding The Warriors scoreless in
the first and fourth quarters.
With the pain from the opening loss
to Elmira came some obvious gain for
Siuslaw.
While the Viks had found themselves
trailing 49-0 just a few minutes into the
second half in their season opener,
against Philomath it was still a 0-0 tie
until The Warriors went on a
three-touchdown series just before the
half — with two of those scores coming
on a fumble recovery and interception.
Though Philomath was able to extend
its lead by two more touchdowns early
in the third period, the Vikings were
