8A | SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 2018 | SIUSLAW NEWS City, NEDCO plan Affordable Housing Audition in September for Last Development Meeting on Sept. 18 Resort Players’ ‘A Christmas Story’ The City of Florence has partnered with the Neighbor- hood Economic Development Corporation (NEDCO) to po- tentially establish an affordable housing project at the Old Senior Center site located at 1424 Airport Road. NEDCO has ap- plied for a state grant to develop up to 12 modest one-, two- or three-bed- room homes on the site. NEDCO will be host- ing an information ses- sion on Tuesday, Sept. 18, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Bromley Room at Siuslaw Public Library, 1460 Ninth St., to introduce the community and potential buy- ers to the project and to talk about next steps to completion. According to NEDCO Exec- utive Director Emily Reiman, “Homeownership is the key method in which working class families have been able to bet- ter their financial position over time. It is the single best way for low and moderate-income fam- ilies to gain assets.” The project is proposed to be developed as “cottage cluster” housing. This type of housing would group smaller homes (usually 500 to 1200 sq. ft.) around a common space shared by the entire development. The current site plan proposes 12 homes with the intent to con- struct all of the homes simul- taneously, not in phases, with a desired construction timeline of 12 months or less, beginning in early 2019. The proposal will be within a land trust model. Land Trusts are a unique form of home ownership where the land itself is legally separated from the structures and held in trust by a nonprofit (NEDCO). Construction of the project is grant dependent. NEDCO has applied for an Oregon Housing & Community Services LIFT Homeownership/Land Trust • 4-person household — grant. Locally Owned & Operated Last Resort Players announc- es an audition call for “A Christ- mas Story” on Sept. 10 and 11 at 6 p.m. at the Florence Events Center. The production will be presented Dec. 14, 15 and 16 as a holiday treat for the commu- nity at the FEC on the flat floor. A Christmas Story is a play in two acts with adult Ral- phie relaying his memories of a mid-America Christmas in 1938. Primary roles are avail- able for two men, two women, five boys and two girls. There are additional roles for a group of school children (girls and boys), neighbors/parents, a caroling group and various adult cameo roles, including a Christmas tree seller and Santa Claus. Jean Shepherd wrote the original story and it was devel- oped into a television movie by Turner Entertainment in 1983. Most remember the iconic leg lamp award and Ralph’s wish for a Red Ryder 200-shot Carbine Action Range Model Air Rifle that would inevitably “shoot your eye out, kid!” Last Resort Players is produc- ing the play under the direction of Jennifer Connor-Chaney with assistance from Cathy Du- pont and other LRP members. The production team will ask actors to read short scenes from the show with other ac- tors. Monologues are optional and encouraged — but not nec- essary. Interested actors may attend both audition dates, but are not required to. Rehearsals will begin Sept.18 and be held two to three nights a week, depending on role com- mitments. The two weeks before the show will be more involved. More information is available from lastresortplayers.org. All levels of participation are encouraged to attend the au- ditions, including production, sound & stage effects, costumes and backstage assistance.
