Bend 6 p.m. • MHS volleyball at Falls City 6 p.m. B Y N ED H ICKSON Siuslaw News Though the start of the next school year is still nearly two weeks away, the fall sports season will officially kick off tomorrow evening for both Mapleton and Siuslaw high schools as the Lady Sailors and Vikings open the volleyball pre-sea- son. Siuslaw will be at home, hosting past Far West League opponent North Bend, beginning at 6 p.m. This year, the Vikings will join the newly adjusted 4A division Sky-Em League, which includes Cottage Grove, Elmira, Junction City, Marist Catholic and Marshfield. North Bend is move up into the 5A Midwestern League this season. Mapleton will be on the road for a non-league match at Falls City of the 1A Casco League. The Lady Sailors will be part of the 1A-3 Mountain West League along with Alsea, Crow, Eddyville Charter, Kings Valley Charter, McKenzie, Mohawk, Oak Hill, Siletz Valley and Triangle Lake. Mapleton will be the smallest member school in the league with 36 students. The first serve for tomorrow's game against The Mountaineers is set for 6 p.m. NED HICKSON/SIUSLAW NEWS The Lady Vikings began official practices last week in preparation for pre-season play tomorrow night. Here are some ideas to help you beat the dog days of fishing: • Fish early in the morn- ing when waters are cooler and fish are more active. • Look for fish in deeper water, where it’s cooler. • Focus on warmwater species like bass, crappie, bluegill and walleye. • Travel to higher eleva- tion lakes and streams where the water, and you, will be cooler. • Consider a trip to the coast where ocean and bay fishing can be good throughout the summer.
