6A | WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 1, 2018 | SIUSLAW NEWS Western Lane Community Foundation Continuing Education Scholarships awarded Western Lane Community Foundation (WLCF) has an- nounced that its 4th annual Continuing Education Schol- arships program for 2018 in- cluded 10 scholarships totaling $12,500. These scholarships are award- ed annually and are designed for students who use a permanent home address within the Flor- ence/Mapleton school districts. Applicants this year included second- and third-year college students, students entering post graduate programs, as well as adults returning to higher edu- cation, trade schools or special arts programs, for career chang- es. While academic achievement is one criteria used in determin- ing recipients, other qualifying characteristics include financial need, outside activities, work history, volunteerism and more. WLCF presented the follow- ing individuals with scholar- ships: • Desiree Winn-Renner re- ceived the Arlis Ulman Schol- arship in the amount of $3,000. Christian Church to host annual VBC The Florence Christian Church, located at Second and Ivy streets, is invit- ing children ages 4 years old through fifth grade, to “Shipwrecked: Vacation Bi- ble School.” The week-long event will take place Aug. 6 to 10, from 9 a.m. to noon each day. Kids will participate in memorable Bible adven- tures, games and hands-on science-related fun. They will also be chal- lenged to collect pocket change to help support the local Backpack for Kids program in Florence. The scholarship is designat- ed for a student majoring in a LCC nursing program or tak- ing credits for admission to the Nursing Program. Winn-Renner is a single mom raising her two children while working at Peace Harbor Hos- pital and attending both LCC and OCCC in Newport with a GPA of 3.13. • Jarmila “Jarka” Popovico- va was selected to receive the Don Tiegen Scholarship in the amount of $1,500, which will assist her as she plans to attend LCC and for a career change in physical therapy. Popovicova currently attends LCC with a GPA of 4.11, works at the Siuslaw Public Library, and teaches yoga at LCC and at Shorewood Independent Living to seniors. The following students are receiving $1,000 each from Beachcomber Pub as a result of its annual Beachcomber Com- munity Dan Barnum Memorial Scholarship fundraiser: • Ann Carpenter is attend- ing the National University of Health Sciences, Doctor of Na- turopathic Medicine Program. Carpenter works for Peace- Health as a registered nurse care coordinator, is an Army and Navy veteran, Girl Scout troop leader and a single mom with three children. • Annalee Bour is attending Lane Community College in its pre-nursing program and her last GPA was 3.3. She is a CNA at Regency, has worked as a medical technician at Spruce Point, and is a single mom. This year, a new scholarship of $1,000, the Linda Lauck Scholarship, is being offered: • Britnee Church is attending LCC and majoring in Forest- ry. Church works at LCC and also is an intern for the Central Coast Ranger District. She is busy attending college and is a single mom raising three chil- dren and a niece in foster care. The following five students received $1,000 scholarships from WLCF: • Lyudmyla Jensen-Norman is attending LCC in the nursing program and her last GPA was 3.74. She is a CNA2 at Peace Har- bor Hospital, has worked as a CNA at Regency, and is married with two school-age children. • Elizabeth Wartnik majors in musical composition and vocals at George Fox University earn- ing a GPA of 3.88 while also do- ing work study displays for the university library. • Holly Hicks attends George Fox University while majoring in global business and main- tains a 3.66 GPA while also working on campus in the uni- versity’s institutional technolo- gy department. • Jonathan Griffes attends Corban University, majors in pastoral ministries and main- tains a 3.51 GPA while also working on campus in dining and food services. • Kathleen Dalbeck recently attended LCC and is enrolled in the Fisheries and Wildlife Management Program at Ore- gon State University. Dalbeck is an educational aide at Siuslaw School District and assists in S.T.E.A.M. activities. She lives here in Florence with her hus- band and four children.
