2B | WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 1, 2018 | SIUSLAW NEWS Annual Rotary golf tourney tees off Saturday The Ninth Annual “Cool at the Coast” golf Tournament being held Saturday, Aug. 4, will offer a day of spectacular golf, fun and prizes. The Rotary Club of Florence supports many community projects and organizations, including cash donations to the Siuslaw Watershed Council in support of the Outdoor Summer Camp for kids grades 4-12; Siuslaw Middle School’s Outdoor School program; The Boys and Girls Club of Western Lane County; and $43,500 in scholarships for local students at Siuslaw High School. Rotarians around the globe have also been unit- ed in the effort to eradicate polio. This year’s annual “Cool at the Coast” golf tournament in Florence will also raise funds for Rotary International’s End Polio Now Campaign. Thirty years ago, the polio virus paralyzed an estimated 350,000 people every year, the majority of them children. By compar- ison, four years ago, polio paralyzed 359 children. Now in 2018, a total of 27 Paralytic Polio cases were reported. The only way to work toward the elimination of polio is by immunizing as many as 450 million children every year. It also takes a contin- ued commitment to check- ing communities for para- lyzed children, inspecting water supplies for virus, and maintaining all of the labs, staff and infrastruc- ture that has been estab- lished in the fight to end polio. When polio is gone, it will be the end of one dis- ease the beginning of a new chapter for Rotary. The ninth annual “Cool at the Coast” tournament will start with the tradi- tional World War II biplane flyover by Aero Legends at Ocean Dunes Golf Links at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
