From June to September this year, as many as six different golf tournaments are taking place at either Ocean Dunes Golf Links or the newly named Florence Golf Links (previously Sandpines). But while the annually sched- uled tournaments are all fundrais- ers for different causes, from Rotary to Siuslaw Outreach Services and the Boys & Girls Club, the new Florence City Championships is a tournament geared specifically for the seriously competitive golfers in the area and beyond. “Our new tournament is an indi- vidual stroke play format rather than a team scramble type of com- petition,” explained Florence Golf 10:04am / 5.0 3:50am / 0.0 9:33pm / 7.6 3:20pm / 2.3 July 10 11:06am / 5.4 10:23pm / 8.0 Links General Manager Rick Reed. “We want this event to keep grow- ing each year into what we hope will become a premier event here each July.” The tournament will take place over two days of 18-hole play, July 14 and 15, with practice rounds being held this Friday, July 13. Entry is limited to golfers who hold a current USGA Handicap Index (determined using the July 1 Handicap Index Revision). Players who are age 50 or older have the option of competing in the senior or regular flight, with divisions for both men and women. “We’re proud of our course here, and want to give golfers a chance to compete in an atmosphere that is both beautiful and challenging,” said Reed.
