SIUSLAW NEWS | SATURDAY, JUNE 23, 2018 | 5A Summer slithers in with reptile visit WLCF opens applications for $3,000 scholarship PHOTOS BY MARK BRENNAN/SIUSLAW NEWS R ichard Ritchey, the Oregon Reptile Man, delighted a room full of young- sters and adults Thursday in the Bromley room at the Siuslaw Public Library. The presentation was the third installment in the library’s “Let’s Rock!” Summer Reading Program. The Bromley room was filled to capacity with an attentive audi- ence. Ritchey brought 17 members of his scaly troop for the performance. Snakes, lizar ds and tortoises of differing species and sizes were shown to the crowd. The Reptile encouraged volunteers to assist with the presentation, encouraging them to handle and interact with the animals while classmates and family looked on. Western Lane Communi- ty Foundation will award its annual $3,000 Arlis Ulman Health Careers Scholarship to a Lane Community College (LCC) Florence Center stu- dent this summer. This scholarship was estab- lished in 2012 by WLCF to assist local students attend- ing LCC in the field of health care and was named in honor of Arlis Ulman, a longtime volunteer with the foundation who served on its board of di- rectors for nine years. Ulman has been actively involved with its scholarship program since 1997. The Ulman Scholarship is designed to assist students enrolled at LCC in its nursing or pre-nursing curriculum. Students must have a perma- nent residence in the Florence/ Mapleton school district and major in the nursing program. This includes students com- pleting prerequisites prior to admission to the nursing pro- gram, and who have demon- strated a commitment to aca- demic achievement and have financial need. Applications may be ob- tained at the LCC Florence Center, 3149 Oak St., or online at www.wlcfonline.org. Application packets may be submitted online, or by mail at PO Box 1589, Florence, OR 97439. Western Lane Community Foundation is celebrating its 44-year anniversary this year. For more information con- cerning the scholarship pro- gram, how to volunteer or how to endow funds, contact West- ern Lane Community Founda- tion Executive Director Gayle Waiss at 541-997-1274. Spirituali-Tea takes a look at Day of the Seafarer On Monday, June 25, at 6:30 p.m., all are invited to join a group of people who enjoy finding the common grounds in diverse spiritual thoughts and paths. The meeting is at 875 Seventh St. in Florence. The topic is “Day of the Sea- farer,” which is an annual and international event coordinat- ed by the International Mari- time Organization. Abdu’l-Baha says, “Verily, divine bestowals are like the sea, and we are the fishes of that sea. The fishes must not look at themselves; they must behold the ocean, which is vast and wonderful. Provision for the sustenance of all is in this ocean; therefore, the divine bounties encompass all, and love eternal shines upon all.” Bring your thoughts on the subject for open discussion. Tea, coffee and cookies will be offered. The gathering will end at 8 p.m. with prayers for the re- quests left in the Prayer Pole in the garden of the Florence Playhouse and those shared by the group.
