Until this weekend, the excitement was limited to Saturdays at Miller Park. But today and tomorrow, soccer fans have a chance to experience the sport in a new venue: On the beach. The Copa Cabana Soccer Tournament will take place on Heceta Beach in front of Driftwood Shores Resort during a two-day event that is playing host to more than 20 teams from throughout Oregon, from ages 12 through adult. “We’re pretty excited to have them here,” said Tami Clark, Director of Sales and Marketing at Driftwood Shores. “It’s going to be two days of fun for people of all ages.” In addition to 5-on-5 soccer games taking place all day today and tomor- row, there will also be a beer garden, food vendors and music, with free admission to matches. Games begin today at 10 a.m. for round-robin play, with teams advancing into tomorrow’s play-offs beginning at 9 a.m., followed by the championship games in the afternoon. In addition to his coach- ing experience with Seaside High School’s football and basketball programs, most recently Smith coached boys basketball as a varsity assistant this past year in Seattle within the large- school division. “He coached two years JV2 at Seaside when the varsity boys team was in the OSAA final twice and won once,” Johnson added. Smith will have a solid base of girls’ team perspec- tive and experience to draw from thanks to Sara Truax, who will return as an assis- tant coach. Meanwhile, Smith and his assistant football coach- es have already rolled into football season with weight training all this week. His first official practice as girls basketball coach will be Monday, Nov. 12. 7:54am / -1.0 7:47pm / 2.8 S IUSLAW N EWS 148 Maple St. Florence 541-997-3441 Reedsport Carving competition drew chainsaw sculptors and artists from as far away as Japan for this year’s event. T he 19th annual Oregon Divisional Carving Championships (ODCC) took place in downtown Reedsport over the Father’s Day weekend. The profile of the Chainsaw Carving Championships, which is spon- sored by the Reedsport and Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce, has grown significantly in the nearly two decades since the event’s inception in 2001. Competitors from around the country, and around the world, have traveled to Oregon to participate in the event, with three competitors from Japan placing in the top 10 this year. The ability to transform a large piece of wood, taken from a very tall tree, into something recognizable and interesting is a natural extension of what woodworkers and loggers have done in the Northwest for decades. Emmerson Hoagland is the coordinator for Reedsport’s Main Street initiative and he thinks the ODCC is not only a fun time for families on Father’s Day but also a link to the area’s past. “The Chainsaw Carving Championship is a wonderful way to commemorate our logging history as well artistically pay homage to the forests that provide such a distinctive natural environment in which to live,” said Hoagland. “We are very proud that Reedsport is the location of such a pres- tigious competition and that many of these carvings will remain in our community for future generations to enjoy.” There were many styles of carving on display at the ODCC this year with strong examples of traditional carving subjects like bears and eagles. The detail apparent in the pieces ranged from roughed-out to finely detailed, mostly dependent on the category the carver entered. There are two types of carving’s that were judged over the four days of this year’s ODCC event. The first is known as a “quick carve,” which took place each day and involved a time See CARVING 3B Calendar JUNE 23 • Kiwanis Golf Scramble 9 a.m. Ocean Dunes Golf Links • Beach soccer tourney Begins at 10 a.m. Driftwood Shores Free admission • Siuslaw basketball tourney 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. SHS main gym $5 for adults Free age 17 and under Siuslaw News 1:16pm / 5.8 B Y N ED H ICKSON Siuslaw News S PORTS B Y M ARK B RENNAN 12:36am / 5.6 11:40pm / 7.4 GIRLS BASKETBALL PHOTOS BY MARK BRENNAN/SIUSLAW NEWS June 24 10:56am / 5.2 10:22pm / 7.3 COACH TO ALSO TACKLE Low Tide June 23 9:52am / 5.0 9:40pm/ 7.3 N EW V IK FOOTBALL JUNE 24 Events at the Oregon Divisional Carving Championships included the 90-minute "quick carve" (top) and two-day- long Master Carver competitions.
