Learn where trails are located, level of difficulty, best uses (e.g., running, accessibility, etc.) and when to go. Maps and “how to get there” information will be included. This event is free and open to the public. Then, on Sunday, June 24, take a “Walk Among Giants.” Come spend an hour walking among the giant over-500-year- old trees of PAWN Trail. Rangers and naturalists will be stationed along the trail be- tween 1 and 3 p.m. to point out special features of the area and the old growth trees that live there. Pick up a self-guided walk- ing guidebook at the trailhead and set off on your adventure, making exciting discoveries as you go. People are encouraged to bring a camera because they won’t want to miss out on cap- turing these awe-inspiring trees. This trail is a three-quarter- mile loop and includes one short ascent. This event is suitable for kids who don’t mind walking. Average trail time is 60 minutes. U.S. Forest Service rangers will be on hand at the trailhead with aquatic and terrestrial wildlife displays. There are no restrooms at the site. This event and parking are free and open to the public. From Florence: Take Highway 126 east to North Fork Roadd. Turn left. At 11.5 miles, contin- ue straight onto Upper North Fork Siuslaw Road. Continue approximately 6 more miles to trailhead. Average drive time from Flor- ence is 35 minutes. Mapleton Community Foundation offering continuing Ed. scholarships Mapleton Community Foun- dation (MCF) and the Maple- ton Lions Club have announced their Continuing Education Scholarships for 2018. These scholarships, which are up to $3,500, are designed for individuals who: • Use permanent home ad- dresses within the Florence, Dunes City, Mapleton, Swiss- home or Deadwood geographi- cal areas; • Have already graduated from high school, have their diploma, GED or were home- schooled • Are eligible to continue a second-year of post-high school education or enroll in a trade school or graduate program. This also includes non-tra- ditional students enrolling in a first-year or continuing educa- tional program after a career or family change or job loss. Scholarships are available for traditional four-year uni- versities, colleges, community colleges and accredited trade schools. While academic achievement is one criterion used in deter- mining recipients, other quali- fying characteristics include fi- nancial need, outside activities, work history, volunteerism, etc. Those who meet these mini- mum qualifications are encour- aged to complete an application.
