The Oregon All-State Game not only showcases some of the state’s best sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade football play- ers, it also introduces them to dynamic guest speakers and other team-building activites while simultaneously bringing awareness to the nearly 450,000 kids in foster care nationally. Among those who will be paticipating in this first-ever event will be Siuslaw sixth-grader Cort Waggoner, seventh-grader Jonathan Rose and eighth-graders Camp LaCouture and Henry Rankin. Waggoner will play on the defensive line; Rose will be at Cort Waggoner defensive end and tight end; LaCouture will play at the defensive end or backfield offense; and Rankin will play at offensive guard and defen- sive tackle. All four will compete in one of three games taking place June 30 at Sheldon High School in Eugene. That same week- end, players will stay overnight in the University of Oregon dorms and participate in team-building exercizes. Partnering with The Oregon Jonathan Rose All-State Games is Every Child Oregon, which works to bring awareness of the needs of kids in foster care and the crisis shortage of foster homes in Oregon. In addition to raising aware- ness, the event also hopes to collect needed items for foster kids. For this reason, there is no admission fee to the games on June 30. However, attendees are encouraged to bring school supplies and personal items that can be put into backpacks Camp LaCouture Henry Rankin that will later be distributed foster kids around Oregon, who often show up at foster homes with few belongings. “We would love to bring a big care package with us to the games,” said John Rose, a coach and father of Jonathan Rose. To that end, area residents who would like to contribute items for the players to donate — particularly school supplies and toiletries — are asked to contact Rose by phone at 714- 654-7056 or by email at john rose7588@gmail.com. “We’ll be glad arrange a time and place to collect any items people would like to donate,” said Rose. Games will begin with the sixth-graders at 9 a.m., fol- lowed by the seventh-grade game at noon and the eighth-graders at 3 p.m. All three games will take place at Sheldon High Scgool in Eugene. I want to give a big THANK YOU! to Sue and Dan Gilday from State Farm Insurance and fellow Rotarians, for hosting the golf tournament this last Saturday at Ocean Dunes. A good time was had by all. Congrats to me and Andy Johnson(my boss and fellow Rotarian) for getting kp’s on #4 and16(that’s closest to pin for non-golfers). Another Congrats to fellow Rotarian Dana Rodet and all the cast of “A Nice Family Gathering”. We went to the play Saturday night and what a talented group of people we have in this small town. Also went to see my brother this weekend, who was camping at Honeyman. What a great place! We have the ocean, river, lakes, a fantastic “Old town”, great restaurants, two golf courses, an Events center that hosts wonderful talent and the list goes on and on. We’re so lucky to live where we do! Happy Summer!
