Formerly the domain of fiction, moving human civilization to the stars is increasingly becoming a sci- entific possibility — and a necessity, if one day we are forced to leave Earth. World-renowned phys- icist and futurist, Dr. Mi- chio Kaku, in his latest book “The Future of Humanity,” explores in rich, intimate detail a compelling vision of how humanity may develop a sustainable civilization in outer space. He reveals the developments in robotics, nanotechnology and bio- technology that may allow us to terraform and build habitable cities on Mars and beyond. He then journeys out of our solar system, where sci- entists have found numer- ous planets orbit-ing neigh- boring stars and may soon find the holy grail of astron- omy: a twin of the Earth. He discusses new technologies such as nanoships, laser sails and fusion rockets that may actually make interstellar travel a possibility, opening up new frontiers to human civilization. Kaku investigates some of the hottest topics in sci- ence today, including warp drive, wormholes, hyper- space, parallel universes and the multiverse. With irre- pressible enthusiasm and a deep understanding of the cutting-edge research in space travel, in “The Future of Humanity,” Kaku takes readers on an exhilarating and inspiring journey to a future in which human- ity may finally fulfill its long-awaited destiny among the stars. Endowment Books On Display A large number of the En- dowment Books first pre- sented last week are now on display and ready for check out in the library’s center display as well as on the “new book” shelves. The purchase of these books are made possible by contribu- tions to the Siuslaw Public Library’s Book Endowment Fund, administered by the Western Lane Communi- ty Foundation. The Fund was established in the early 1990’s with a contribution from the Friends of the Li- brary, who have made suc- cessive contributions since then, as well as numerous individual and community organization donors. Trails Locals Love On Saturday, June 23, at 1 p.m. in the library’s Bromley Room, VisionQuest and the Siuslaw Public Library will be presenting “Trails Locals Love” with Siuslaw Nation- al Forest Recreation Staff Officer Dan Matthews; Siu- slaw National Forest Trails Coordinator Kraig Lindelin; outdoor enthusiast and trail-runner Dennis King; and librarian and avid hiker Kevin Mittge. Learn about trails up and down the coast that locals love, level of difficulty, best use (e.g. running accessi- bility, etc.) and when to go. Maps and other information will be included. This pro- gram is free and open to the general public. A follow-up program the next day, Sunday, June 24, will feature a hike along the PAWN trail, beginning at 1 p.m., with rangers and nat- uralists along the trail to point of special features. “Ghosts in the Kelp: Sea Otters on the Oregon Coast” On Saturday, June 30, at 1 p.m., join Robert Bailey, board president of the Elakha Alliance, to dis- cuss the history of sea otters on the Oregon Coast, their ecological and cultural im- portance, their disappear- ance and the prospects for their return and recovery. Please note that this pro- gram was rescheduled from an earlier date.
