To learn further details and instructions about this contest, visit the FRAA website: www. fraaoregon.org/central-coast- entry-instructions.html. The deadline for submissions is June 30, 2018. T he National Safe Boating Week campaign kicks off this month and continues throughout the year. On Monday, City of Florence Mayor Joe Hen- ry presented Station Siuslaw River Coast Guard and Auxiliary members with a city proclamation for Safe Boating Week, May 19 -25. Several Coast Guard members, includ- ing USCG Station Siuslaw River Mas- ter Chief Petty Officer Tim Tregoning and Executive Chief Petty Officer Kevin Smith, attended the presentation at the city council meeting. The U.S. Coast Guard, Coast Guard Auxiliary and City of Florence, who are safe boating partners, wish to help ensure the public has a safe, secure and enjoy- able recreational boating experience this season. While enjoying the Siuslaw River, Pacific Ocean, local lakes and other near- by recreational waterways, boaters (in- cluding the paddle craft community) are encouraged to always wear the appropri- ate life jacket and understand navigation rules. U.S. Coast Guard statistics show that drowning is the reported cause of death in over 75 percent of recreational boating fatalities. A large majority of those who drowned were not wearing life jackets. Operator inattention, improper lookout, operator inexperience, excessive speed and alcohol-use rank as other primary contributing factors in accidents. “Time and time again, the wearing of life jackets proves to significantly increase chance of survival and detection when the unthinkable happens,” said USCG Master Chief Tregoning state. “With the many variables that can affect the outcome of a voyage, life jackets are cheap insurance to help Mariners return to their loved ones after a day on the water.” In the State of Oregon, all boaters who operate a motorboat over 10 horsepower are required to take an approved boating safety course and carry a boater education card onboard. A variety of paddling education courses are also available in Lane County. To be a responsible boater, boating etiquette and the rules of the water should always be followed. To help the public embrace safe boat- ing, the Coast Guard Auxiliary performs free vessel safety checks year-round and offers safe boating courses over the sum- mer. Local businesses can also become safe boating partners by displaying safe boating literature provided by the Auxil- iary.
