The registration booth opens at 8 a.m. Saturday morning and will host T-shirt sales and the favorite raffle that runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This year’s T-shirts show two impressive classic vehi- cles from local owners and the U.S. Coast Guard Helicopter. “This year we added the helicopter to our graphics to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the Siuslaw Coast Guard Station,” said Scalera. Proceeds from the fund raiser will go to sup- port recipients of the Jose Dela Mora Scholarship Fund. The scholarship’s namesake, Jose Dela Mora, was entering his senior year at Siuslaw High School when he drowned while swimming with friends at Lake Woahink, on June 26, 2015. The closure is mainly a response to a number of funda- mental changes suggested by the Oregon Department of Justice (DOJ) in the wake of an inquiry conducted last year by the DOJ, which has impacted volunteer participation at OCHS. Butzer is also tasked with communicating with current volunteers and staff in an effort to ascertain volunteer concerns and address them. “OCHS will be working with new Interim Executive Director Barbara Butzer to implement a volunteer recruit- ment effort, update job descrip- tions and improve staff train- ing. Over the last 18 months, OCHS volunteer and member- ship numbers have plummeted due to the DOJ investigation and the press that followed. It is this board’s purpose to reverse that trend through proper governance and open communication,” said OCHS Board President Jack Hannigan. OCHS has consistently been voted as one of the best places to volunteer in Florence and is WEDNESDAY THURSDAY well respected as one of the city’s 501(c)3 organizations . Public support for the work done at OCHS remains high as evidenced by a number of recent donations, one of which is significant at approximately $1 million. Hannigan and the OCHS board are determined to work with Butzer to create an organ- ization that operates legally, ethically and with deep con- cern for the animals under the groups care. “Florence’s heart for pets beats strong. and the OCHS board is working diligently to serve the community and it’s dogs and cats. We appreciate the support and patience of our members while we work together to bring stability to this revered organization,” Hannigan said. The OCHS Thrift Store is one of the main funding sources for the group and cus- tomers have consistently donated items to the store and purchased thousands of dollars in merchandise a month from the busy Bay Street shop. Hannigan wants to ensure that level of community sup- port will not be interrupted for long. “We have a reputation as a terrific place to shop and we never want to disappoint our customers. We offer a great selection of merchandise at a very fair price, and we always want shoppers at the Thrift Store to have a great experi- ence,” he said. “We will be back better than ever.
