6 A SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, MAY 5, 2018 Lady Lutherans give WINGS to Mapleton Food Share Farmer’s Market to open in Old Town The New Florence Farmer’s Market will officially open Tuesday, May 15, from 3 to 7 p.m. The market will be locat- ed next to the Veteran’s Memorial Park in Old Town, at Bay and Kingwood streets. The Market will be open rain or shine every Tuesday through October. Florence is joining markets up and down the Oregon coast in providing locally grown and processed foods to fill the need for food security locally and in surrounding areas. Committed responses from 10 area ven- dors will provide greater access to a variety of organic and sustainably grown farm products, both fresh and processed. And as part of the market’s mission to support the commu- nity, the SNAP program will be accessible to its participants at the market. The market is an initiative of the Siuslaw Vision program and is sponsored by the Florence Area Community Coalition. A market team, coordinated and assembled by Mary Shaw, worked this year to make the market a reality. “Community response for the market has been tremen- dously supportive,” said Shaw. “Many residents helped to fund the market through its gofundme page.” For more information, visit rivercal.org, the website for the Siuslaw Vision and its ini- tiatives. COURTESY PHOTOS On Wednesday, May 2, members of the Resurrection Lutheran Church group WINGS (Women in God’s Service) sponsored a Sharing High Tea in support of Mapleton Food Share. More than 60 women from the community were in attendance and were treated to a variety of teas, scones, finger sandwiches and other treats. Florence Mayor Joe Henry and Ron Duzy were on hand to serve tea to the many guests, including Karen Harden, Director of Mapleton Food Share. A total of $1,541 in cash donations was received, along with a large quantity of food. Big Wave Poetry Slam returning to Florence in June The third annual Big Wave Poetry Slam, sponsored by the Florence Regional Arts Center (FRAA), will roll into the Florence Events Center (FEC) on Saturday, June 30. Poets from across the Pacific Northwest will compete for the largest cash prizes in the state. Starting at 6:30 p.m., up to 30 poets will perform their 3- minute original poems or spo- ken word pieces for the audi- ence and the judges. The entry fee is $15. The first-place prize is $500, second place takes home $250 and third place is $100. Contestants are judged on both poem content and presentation. Registration for the event is not yet open so stay tuned. Friends of poets and the arts are invited to attend and enjoy a great evening of poetry per- formed in the slam style. This simply means the poems or spoken word pieces are per- formed dramatically, which makes for some great entertain- ment. Admission this year is $5 and doors open to the public at 6 p.m. The Big Wave Poetry com- mittee is encouraging all poets interested in entering the slam contest to start polishing their poems and practicing their per- formances. Florence has an excellent opportunity for poets to come out and practice in front of fellow poets during the open mic poetry night on the first Tuesday of each month at FRAA. The next open mic is Tuesday, May 1 at 6:30 p.m. The committee is also look- ing for volunteers who are will- ing to help organize and set up for the Poetry Slam. The next committee meeting is at Saturday, May 5, at 9 a.m. at Old Town Coffee Roasters, 125 Nopal St, Florence.
