Page 3 Center Stage Florence Events Center www.EventCenter.org 541-997-1994 Music Matters Rhody Show T he Siuslaw chapter holds two fl ower Miles to Go Quintet shows annunally. Th e early rhody show was held in April and the second will be held in conujuction with the Rhododen- dron Days Celebration held annually on the third full weekend of May. Th e Siuslaw Chapter Flower Shows are judged shows. Th e group strongly encour- ages all chapter members and the community at large to participate by bringing many entries. Th eir goal is to educate and intro- duce the show to many viewers with many selections available from the rhododen- dron world. Entries to the show will be accepted on Saturday morning from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Th e show is open to the public following the judging on Saturday, May 19 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday, May 20 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For more information and a calendar of events, you may visit the Siuslaw Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society website at www.siuslawars.org. One would think that one of the greatest scientists who ever lived would have valued most the prizes, the honors and the public acclamation awarded him. But “I know that the most joy in my life has come to me from my violin,” said Albert Einstein. While the FloTones may not have the name recognition of an Einstein, music matters to them as well and they clearly experience the joy of music through their vocal jazz performances. To share this with the Florence community, the FloTones are producing two performances of “Music Matters!” Saturday and Sunday, May 26 & 27. Th e FloTones will be introducing some songs recently added to their repertoire including “Misty” and “For All We Know” and will include an audi- ence favorite, Chuck Cassey’s arrangement of “Th e William Tell Overture.” Sharing the stage with the FloTones will be four CROW Kids, all recently on stage in the C.R.O.W production of “Tarzan.” Th e Kids soloists include Alizabeth Norton, William Owens, Kristen Owens and Elyse Stewart who will be presenting “Someone Like You” (Alizabeth), “Imagine (William), “Wild Horses” (Kristen) and “A Million Dreams” (Elyse). Th e second half of the shows will feature Th e Miles To Go Quintet made up of percussionist and group Rhody Run May 19 - starts at 9:00 a.m. Pre-register on-line www.eventcenter.org/general/page/ rhody-run-1 Rhody Court Showcase A Nice Family Gathering T he entire court of wonderful young women and men has become part of a beloved legacy and will reign over the Rho- dodendron Festival Parades and act as ambassadors for the entire Festival weekend. Coronation night, one young woman and one young man will be crowned 2018 Queen Rhododendra and King of the Coast. Scholarships will be awarded to the entire senior court. Please join us for a fun fi lled evening where these young people can share their talents and experiences and KICK OFF the 2018 Rhododendron Festival! Tickets are $10 for adults and $6 for students. We are ready to Rhody Rendezvous! Spring Concerts T he Siuslaw School District Spring Band Concert will be held on Monday, June 4th, led by band instructor, Chris Rowbotham. Th e middle and high school bands will showcase their musical achievements this school year.. On Tuesday, June 5th, at 7 p.m., the Siuslaw Choir Concert will be featured on the FEC stage, led by Siuslaw music teacher, Bruce Morganti. Th e choir will be singing a variety of repertoire, includ- ing: solo work, classical selections, pop and show tunes, and pieces from this year's festival catalog. Th e Siuslaw school choir concerts are free and the public is encouraged to attend and support the vocalists. founder Nate Kaplan, songstress Maree Beers, bass- ist Ray Brassfi eld, Michael Anderson on guitar and Greg Aldridge on keyboard. Th e popular quintet features familiar jazz tunes and appears frequently in the Florence area. Th ey have a regular gig in the Blue Bills Sports Bar in the Th ree Rivers Casino. Guest artists will include trumpet player Ron Green with the FloTones and Nyah Vollmer with the Miles To Go Quintet. Does music matter to Florence’s school age youngsters? Just listen to what some SHS band stu- dents say: “Music gives me a way to express myself in a positive and healthy way” and “Music matters to me because without it I would have never dis- covered my voice. It makes life fun and colorful.” And it isn’t just the students. Band director Chris Rowbotham adds, “Being in a band is about time management, dedication to practice and working together as team, all great qualities to have to be successful at anything they want to do.” Th e Saturday performance is at 7 p.m. with the Sunday matinee at 3 p.m. Tickets are available now at the FEC box offi ce: $20 for adults and $10 for students. Pictured: the Siuslaw School District Kids Choir P hil Olson’s A Nice Family Gathering, presented by Last Resort Players and opening June 8, has been described by National Public Radio (NPR) as “Garrison Keillor meets “Topper” by way of “Fargo”!” Directed by Judy Adams Kaplan, this award-winning family comedy is putting lots of the fun back into this dysfunc- tional family gathering. At the same time funny and full of heart, audiences may recognize elements of their own family life in this well-constructed little pearl of a play. According to Psychology Today, west- ern culture has been obsessed with sibling rivalry since the biblical story of Cain and Abel. Freud attributed this natural confl ict to a competition between siblings for pa- rental love and attention. A Nice Family Gathering has some issues with “sibling rivalry” and much more. Lots of laughs and touching moments are delivered as the oldest, Michael, a successful doc- tor, and Carl, the second less fi nancially successful son, play off each other. Th e quiet and oft en overlooked sister, Stacy, delivers some surprises of her own. It is very well cast and the Last Resort Players bring it to perfection. Come see the show and bring a hanky to wipe away the tears of laughter and ever-loving sweetness. Th e show runs over two weekends, June 8, 9, 10 & 15, 16, 17.
