North Bend won the girls team title with 203 points, followed by Marshfield (162), Siuslaw (63), South Umpqua (49.33), Brookings- Harbor (23) and Douglas (22). In the boys 1,500 meters, Jensen crossed the finish in 4:23.18 for a per- sonal best and the win, and also com- peted in the 800 meters, finishing third with a season-best time of 2:08.94. In the throws, Rendon-Padilla won both the discus and javelin, landing marks of 118-8 and 164-3, respective- ly. Also scoring for the boys were freshman Ryan Jennings, who cleared the 300-meter hurdles in a PR-time of 45.57 for second place; sophomore Kiger Johnson ran a PR in the 1,500- meter race in 4:33.73; senior Kyle King landed a season-best mark in the triple jump at 40-2.25 for second place. Marshfield won the boys team title with 203 points. North Bend was sec- ond overall (156), followed by Siuslaw (70), Brookings-Harbor (50), Douglas (41) and South Umpqua (2). Today, Siuslaw is at the Grants Pass Rotary Invitational, beginning at 10 a.m. Tuesday, the Viking JV tracksters will compete at North Bend begin- ning at 4 p.m. On Friday, Siuslaw will be at the Wally Ciochetti Invitational at Cottage Grove High School. Senior Kyle King leaped 40-2.25 for a season-best mark and third place. Coach from 1B Smith holds a masters degree in physical education from Willamette, where he earned his teaching certificate. His bachelor’s degree is in exercise science from Western Oregon. The 2005 Sweet Home graduate played his high school football under Rob Younger, the current director of the Oregon Athletic Coaches Association. Smith’s current job commitment runs through June 22, but he plans to visit Florence from May 10-12. “He’s anxious to meet some potential coaches, and he’s anxious to meet people from the community,” Johnson said. “He has a plan in place, and he’s ready to hit the ground running.” Smith says he will meet with players and take in the dis- trict track championships, which will be held at Hans Petersen Field May 11-12. Johnson believes his new coach is much like Smith’s predecessors, who invested in weight training and condi- tioning. “It’s nice to have a football coach who’s invested in the weight room, like (Len) Lutero and Dodson and (Jamin) Pool,” Johnson said. The Siuslaw AD obviously is pleased with the newest Vikings football head man. “I want a good person who’s an educator, who is going to be a great role model and a great teacher for our young people,” Johnson said. “And that’s who we think we have.” Fishing from 1B and others. • Water conditions on the Clackamas are good, giving anglers a decent shot at some late winter and early summer steelhead. • Anglers on the central coast report catching black rockfish feeding near the sur- face, making this a great time to catch rockfish on light tackle.
