I will probably never be a fan of “futbol.” My experience and history with actual foot- ball is too saturated into my blood. I recently attended my first soccer match in more than two decades when I went to Miller Park to watch my grandson play soccer. The weather was on the cool side with potential for rain. The 9 a.m. game was just a little bit late in getting started, but for a first week of play the games proceeded smoothly. I do not know who organ- ized the soccer program; it was well run. The youngest players played three-on- three. Each seven-member team was divided into smaller three-person teams with a substitute. This enabled the entire team to be playing at the same time on adjacent fields. The players were fully active for fall our quarters and some players were tired by the end of their game. Accordingly, players could be switched with a team- mate from the other field if a competitive balance was needed. There was no goalkeeper. For the girls, Blankenship raced to a personal record in the 800 meters at 2 minutes, 28.79 seconds, claiming the win. Teammate and sophomore Anne Wartnik also PRd in the race, finishing third in 2:37.10. Other standout performances for the Lady Viks included freshman Andrea Osbon, who landed second in the dis- cus at 94-5, then threw a PR in the shot at 33-2, earning her third place overall. It was then the new Vikings head coach met one of the school's coaching legends, Tim Dodson. “I came out for summer camp, for 7- on-7 drills,” Smith recalled Thursday. “I know Siuslaw has had a successful program, and I want to make it happen again.” Smith, 31, is Oregon born (Bend) and bred (Sweet Home), and grateful for an opportunity to return to the state after a school year adrift in Washington state. “I left for Seattle to be with my girl- friend,” he said. Now she wants him to get his chance to do what he loves in Oregon. “He was looking for a position that paired football with a (physical educa- tion) position,” Siuslaw athletic direc- tor Chris Johnson said. “He’s been a football coach, but he didn’t have a PE job with it.” Siuslaw will be Smith’s third head- coaching job. He guided La Grande to a Greater Oregon League title in 2014 and a state playoff berth. The Tigers lost to North Bend in the first round. Smith moved to Seaside to be an assistant coach in 2015, taking over as head coach in 2016.
